Look Who Wants to Build the World's Fastest Supercomputers

The U.S. Department of Energy said on Friday it is spending $425 million (approximately Rs. 2,623 crores) into research extreme-scale computing and build two super-computers, which would be the world's fastest, for research into basic science as well as nuclear weapons.
The DOE is awarding $325 million (approximately Rs. 2,006 crores) to build "Summit" for Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and "Sierra" at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
An additional $100 million (approximately Rs. 617 crores) will go to research into "extreme scale supercomputing" technology as part of a program called FastForward2, the DOE said in a news release.
The supercomputers, made with components from IBM , Nvidia and Mellanox, will run five to seven times faster than the United States' current fastest computers.
Summit and Sierra will operate at 150 petaflops and 100 petaflops, respectively, compared to the world's current top super-computer, the Tianhe-2 in China, which performs at 55 petaflops, Nvidia said in a separate news release.
IBM built the first supercomputer to reach 1 petaflop, a precise measure of how fast computers calculate, in 2008, also for the Department of Energy.
Researchers worldwide will be able to apply for time to use the Summit computer. The National Nuclear Security Administration will use Sierra "to ensure the safety, security and effectiveness of the nation's nuclear deterrent without testing," Nvidia said.
Santa Clara, California-based Nvidia is best-known for its high-end personal-computer graphics chips favored by gamers. In recent years it has developed more advanced versions of those chips suitable for parallel processing on supercomputers and in data centers.
It has also been working with IBM to develop future chip offerings for high-end enterprise customers.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Removes Silent Mode on Phones: Report

Google might be boasting about its latest Android Lollipop update as the company's "sweetest release yet," however the release seems to have been hit by multiple issues right from the start.
Last week, a Wi-Fi related bug was reported to be affecting some users, and now multiple reports are claiming that that Android 5.0 Lollipop removes the very useful 'silent mode' from phones. Additionally, some Nexus 7 (2013) tablet users are reporting that they are having issues in video playback after updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Android Police first pointed out (via Reddit) the missing 'silent mode' feature, saying, "Lowering the volume only offers vibrate mode, and the new priority notification system isn't going to help you."
When users turn down the volume to '0' on Android smartphones (Android 4.3 and below), it activates vibration mode, while the silent mode is usually activated by turning volume up once again. In phones running Android 4.4 KitKat and higher, it turning the volume down once again below vibrate mode activates silent mode. It appears that with Android 5.0 Lollipop, turning the volume down below '0' offers only vibration mode, and no option exists to achieve true silent mode.
While this may be a bug, Google may have introduced this as a feature, in line with its new Priority notifications introduced in Android 5.0 Lollipop. It describes Priority notifications as, "For fewer disruptions, turn on Priority mode via your device's volume button so only certain people and notifications get through. Or schedule recurring downtime like 10pm to 8am when only Priority notifications can get through."
The Priority notifications offers three modes namely - None, Priority, and All. The Priority mode will only allow a few set of notifications to go through and users will see a Star mark in the status bar when in this mode. Meanwhile, the None mode will allow the phone to receive all notifications but will not alert the user. Notably, the None mode in Priority notifications even limits set alarm functionality. Motorola has shared a YouTube video to explain the new Priority notifications on the Moto X running the new Android 5.0 Lollipop.

How to Install Multiple Apps on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu

You’ve got a new iPhone, iPad or any other gadgets and you’re very excited about it, but before you can begin using it properly you’ll have to spend hours installing all your favourite software. If you could automate the installation process, you’d save a lot of time and get straight to doing what you bought the machine for. Here are two great services that let you quickly install a lot of apps on Windows and Mac and two tricks to do the same on Android and iOS devices.
Windows and Ubuntu
If you use a Windows computer, you must try Ninite. We tried a few other alternatives and found that these apps try to serve too many ads, sponsored apps, or run in the background in your system. Ninite is free, has no ads and gives you a single exe file that you can delete after installing all your apps. That is why it is better than the alternatives. Windows machines that have never been formatted or restored to factory settings are rare. Windows also happens to be the operating system on a large number of new computers around the world. In a nutshell, a lot of people are spending a lot of time installing the apps that let them make the most of the operating system. If you want to make it a single-click, hassle-free process, follow these steps.
1. Go to Ninite and scroll down. You’ll see several apps in categories such as Utilities, Browsers, etc. Ninite lists several great, free apps for Windows such as Glary Utilities, VLC Media Player, Avast anti-virus, Dropbox and LibreOffice. The Ninite home page has the full list of apps sorted into categories such as browsers, messaging, media, imaging, security and more. Most people won’t need any app other than the ones listed on Ninite.
2. Select all the software you need by checking the boxes next to them > click the big green Get Installer button.
3. Ninite’s installer (usually less than 1MB in size) will begin downloading now. Once that’s done, run it. It will automatically start downloading all the apps and install them. Ninite also removes all the adware (toolbars, search engine defaults, etc.) that some apps try to make you install. This only works for desktop apps, not Windows 8 style apps.
Ninite is also available for Ubuntu Linux, but the selection of apps is a lot smaller than Windows.

Mac
Unlike Windows users, those on Apple’s Mac operating system get a good collection of pre-loaded apps. Yet, if you want to quickly install some of the most popular third-party apps on Mac, these steps will help.
1. Open Get Mac Apps > select the apps you need > click “Install These!”
2. This will generate a command. Copy it.
3. Open Terminal. If you don’t know how to do this, hit Cmd+space > type Terminal > press Enter.
4. Paste the code in Terminal > hit Enter.
5. That’s it. In case you’re wondering whether Get Mac Apps has good apps, the collection is quite good – featuring free apps such as Flux, Skype, VLC,Handbrake, Dropbox, Evernote and Notational Velocity, among others.
Note that both Ninite and Get Mac Apps use the official sources of the apps, so they are safe to use.

Smartphones
You can also install multiple apps easily on smartphones, but these methods will not work if you want to install new apps. They work only with apps you’ve previously installed or purchased from the same Apple ID or Google account. This method is useful if you have a set of essential apps that you always install every time you get a new device, but not if you are using a new Apple ID or Google account.
Android
If you have an Android device, just go through the following steps to install several previously installed apps quickly.
1. Open Google Play Store > tap the three horizontal lines on the top-left > My Apps > All.
2. Tap and hold any app that doesn’t have “Installed” written next to it. This will select the app. Now scroll down and select all the previously purchased apps you want to install > tap the Install button at the top.3. All these apps will now be installed, though you will have to negotiate through the permission screens for each app and approve it individually.

iOS
Unlike Android, iOS doesn’t have an option where you can select all previously purchased apps and do a one-tap install. But Apple’s method is much faster. Check these steps and see it yourself.
1. Open App Store > tap Updates > Purchased.2. The apps you have installed will have an “Open” button next to them. The ones you haven’t installed will have a cloud icon with an arrow pointing downwards. Tap that icon for all the apps you want to install and your iOS device will start downloading them – no password required.

These methods are great for quickly setting up your new device, but if you prefer any other ways or services, let us know with a comment. We have more useful tutorials in our How to section, which you might want to visit.

Understanding Windows 10 Technical Preview
In this preview, Windows 10 will go through a lot of change with updates, and you will have access to the Windows Feedback app. This app helps send feedback to Microsoft about the different features they are adding and removing to Windows 10 in the preview period and thus, helps you be a part of the team that improves and polishes the OS.
That apart, there are many new features that you can try out with Windows 10. For one thing, it has a new start menu - a blend of live tiles and classic desktop apps. The Windows apps also don't have to run in a forced full-screen mode, making them more useful for desktop users. Windows 10 also features much improved file explorer and search features.Windows also finally supports multiple desktops now. If these are features you had been crying out for since switching to Windows 8, then the Windows 10 Technical Preview will be quite appealing.
Warning
Before you proceed to try this release, know that you might face system-breaking bugs and end up losing data. If you're installing Windows 10 on your primary PC, we suggest you take a complete backup. Microsoft recommends that you install it on a secondary PC, which is sound advice when using unfinished software.
How to download Windows 10 Technical Preview
If you still want to go ahead, then here's how you can download the Windows 10 Technical Preview.

If prompted for the Windows 10 Technical Preview product key, use NKJFK-GPHP7-G8C3J-P6JXR-HQRJR
User data and rollback
If you are installing the preview on top of Windows 7 or 8 and above, you should be able to preserve Windows settings, personal files, and most apps when upgrading to Windows 10 Technical Preview. However, Windows Vista users will have to do a clean install, and since the Windows 10 Technical Preview is x86 only, Windows RT users are completely out of luck.
If, after installing Windows 10 Technical Preview, you want to go back to your old version of Windows for whatever reason, you need to be prepared before you install the preview. Windows 7 or Vista users should create recovery media from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Windows 8 or above users should create a USB recovery drive.
Check the Microsoft website for more information before proceeding with the installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview.
Updates and other information
Once you've installed the preview, you'll get automatic updates. Your preview copy will expire on April 15, 2015, by when we should have a consumer preview of Windows 10. Microsoft has posted instructions to help you familiarise with the new Windows 10 operating system.
The Windows Insider Program allows users to stay on the cutting edge of Windows software. Microsoft will issue frequent updates that you can download as and when available.
A consumer preview version of Windows 10 will be available early next year, and that is probably a much better option for most users. If you can't wait though, you can download this early release build of Windows 10.

How to Remove WhatsApp Blue Ticks aka Read Receipts

Much to the chagrin of its users, WhatsApp quietly introduced read receipts(letting people see exactly when a message is read, not just delivered) earlier this month. The app always showed one tick mark when you sent a message, which changed to two grey ticks when it was delivered. Now, the app shows two blue ticks when the recipient has read your message This feature was rolled out without an update to the app itself. This means that there was no privacy setting to disable read receipts when the feature was rolled out.
The lack of this basic feature in WhatsApp really ticked us off, and we had promised that we'd be back with a tutorial on how to disable WhatsApp blue ticks as soon as it was possible. True to our word, here we are now that WhatsApp has unveiled this feature for Android. Here's how to get rid of those annoying blue ticks in WhatsApp - but if you do this, then you won't be able to see the receipts either.
If you want to check when other people see your messages, then you need to allow them to see read receipts from you. For now, this is only possible for Android users, and only if you manually update the app via the WhatsApp website. WhatsApp typically releases updates first via its website, and then rolls out the update for Android's Google Play store, followed by updates for other platforms, so the update will be available for all devices soon.
The first step is to get the latest APK file from WhatsApp:
  1. Download the latest (version 2.11.444) WhatsApp apk from the official website.
  2. On your Android phone, go to Settings > Security > Check Unknown sources, to enable installing apps from outside Google Play. Note that the exact path to the setting can vary depending on your device manufacturer and Android version - the important thing to note is that you enable installing apps from unknown sources.
  3. Open the apk on your Android phone. This will install the latest version of the app on your device.
Once the app is installed, here's how to disable read receipts:
  1. Open WhatsApp and tap three vertical dots icon on the top right.
  2. Now go to Settings > Account > Privacy.
  3. Uncheck Read receipts.
whatsapp_no_blue_ticks.jpg

That will disable the blue ticks on WhatsApp. As we noted above, feature isn't available on other platforms or on Google Play as yet, but now that this feature has appeared on the official WhatsApp apk, we can hope that an update will bring it to all platforms. We will update this article when that happens. Until then, you can head to our How To section for more tutorials.
