How to Safely Clean Your Laptop and Other Gadgets

Like everything else in your home (or pockets), gadgets tend to get dirty. An unnaturally large number of people are not too particular about cleaning their gadgets and that is the reason we end up with layers of dust on our high-end speakers and keyboards caked with dirt.
Apart from the obvious hygiene reasons, it is important to clean your gadgets to ensure that their performance doesn't suffer and so that they don't die on you a lot sooner. Yes, well-maintained gadgets do tend to last longer than their ill cared for counterparts. Due to the complex electronics involved, cleaning gadgets isn't as simple a task as mopping the floor. You need to handle components with care and ensure that you don't damage them while trying to do a basic clean-up. That is just what we will cover in this guide. Read on to find out how to safely clean your gadgets.
What you'll need
While different gadgets need different cleaning materials, here's a brief list of the items you will need during clean-up drive:
1. Microfibre lint-free cloth: This is the cloth that's used to clean eyeglasses. It's cheap and widely available. A must for cleaning displays.
2. Dust blower: This is a portable dust blower that you operate with your hand. Helps remove dust from nooks and crannies you can't reach easily. Available in electronics stores for as low as Rs. 50.
3. Compressed air: A slightly more expensive alternative to the dust blower.
4. Rubbing alcohol: It's not a good idea to use water to clean gadgets. Rubbing alcohol is a much safer choice.
5. Flathead screwdriver: You'll need it when cleaning keyboards.
6. Lukewarm water: Works when you're cleaning plastic components such as the keys in your keyboard. Not to be used with electronic components.
7. Toothpicks: Very useful for removing accumulated lint from charging ports. Be careful not to break them though!

Displays:
Cleaning a display is quite simple, as long as you take the following precautions.
1. Avoid wiping screens with rough cloths such as paper towels and even shirts. This might leave scratch marks on the display, remove anti-fingerprint coatings on touchscreens, or even permanently damage parts of the screen.
2. If you're using water to wipe the screen, do not apply it on the screen. Apply it on the microfibre cloth and then wipe the screen.
3. We don't recommend any chemicals to clean the display. A little bit of lukewarm water on a microfibre cloth should do the trick if a dry cloth isn't helping.
4. Switch off the display (or the laptop, if you are cleaning a laptop display before cleaning.

Desktop components:
If you just bought yourself a shiny new desktop, you don't have to worry about cleaning it. But dusty as most Indian cities are, you might want to keep checking the cabinet at least once in six months to make sure that dust isn't accumulating inside it. In this case, dust often gets caught in the fans on the CPU or GPU, or the vents in the cabinet. This leads to increased heat in the cabinet and that leads to decreasing performance and shortened lifespan of the components. Here's how to clean these components.
1. Switch off the computer.
2. The most important step is to ground yourself. If you don't an electrostatic discharge when you touch the computer (or any component) could damage it. To avoid this, make sure that your hand is in contact with metal while you're cleaning the PC. Detailed steps are available.
3. If you bought a branded PC, remember that opening a cabinet usually voids warranties, so be advised.
4. Use the dust blower to remove any dust from various components. Wherever there are fans or grilles, there's bound to be a lot of dust. You should remove all of the dust. You can use a light brush too, but nothing with hard bristles. Paintbrushes and shaving brushes are ideal

Google Announces 1TB of Free Cloud Storage for Chromebook Users

With most of its competitors in the cloud storage space slashing prices, Google has announced 1TB of storage free of cost for new Chromebook buyers. Google says the 1TB subscription, which will be valid for two years, is worth $240.
"That's enough space to keep more than 100,000 awkward holiday sweater pics safe and shareable in Drive. With that much free storage, you can use your Chromebook for work, play and pretty much everything else you'll do this holiday season," added Alex Vogenthaler, Group Product Manager, Google, on the company's Google Drive blog. Vogenthaler also added that users would need to redeem the offer before January 1 next year.
Last month, the search giant announced a new service for students called Google Drive for Education. The Drive for Education service is applicable toGoogle Apps for Education customers at no extra charge. Users will get unlimited online storage and support for individual files up to 5TB.
Google's competitor, Microsoft, also announced last month that it would be rolling out unlimited OneDrive storage to Office 365 Home, Personal, and University subscribers over the coming months. Notably, the unlimited OneDrive storage for Office 365 users comes after Microsoft already bumped the storage limit up from 20GB to 1TB in June. Microsoft has also said that OneDrive for Business users will get unlimited storage as part of the Office 365 roadmap sometime in 2015, with First Release customers first in line.

Google Unveils Devices and Activity Dashboard for Comprehensive Tracking

Google on Monday introduced a new Devices and Activity dashboard that helps manage devices linked to a user's Google account. Alongside, the company has also launched a security wizard for 'Google for Work' accounts that details the necessary steps to take to ensure security of the account.
The Devices and Activity dashboard gives users a comprehensive view of all devices that are linked to their Google accounts. It shows all the devices that have accessed the user's account in the last 28 days, or are currently signed-in. Apart from the time and location of the devices that accessed the account, users can also 'Remove access' of any device from this page - which automatically signs the user out.
The new security wizard for Google for Work account holders brings features like providing contact information for easy account recovery (if the domain security policy allows it), or reviewing recent account activity and account permissions.
"Security in the cloud is a shared responsibility and keeping your company information secure is at the core of what we do everyday. By making users more aware of their security settings and the activity on their devices, we can work together to stay a step ahead of any bad guys," says Eran Feigenbaum, Director of Security Google for Work.

Apple Market Value Hits a Record $700 Billion

apple_campus_sc_ap.jpg
A rise in Apple shares Tuesday pushed the market value of the trend-setting US tech icon above $700 billion (roughly Rs. 43,30,515 crores), becoming the first company to hit that milestone.
Apple shares rose nearly one percent in morning trade to $119.75 at 1525 GMT, making its market capitalization some $701.7 billion (roughly Rs. 43,41,031 crores). The shares were fluctuating in a narrow range later. The maker of the iPhone and iPad is by far the world's most valuable company by stock market value, well ahead of Exxon Mobil at $403 billion (roughly Rs. 24,93,139 crores) and Microsoft at $394 billion (roughly Rs. 24,37,461 crores).
Investors and analysts were upbeat on Apple at the start of the holiday shopping season, expecting strong sales during the gift-giving period that kicks off in the US with Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday.
"We believe the stars are well aligned for Apple to shine bright this holiday season," said Brian White at Cantor Fitzgerald in a research note, adding that he expects to see heavy demand for the new iPhone models and a refreshed lineup of iPads.

UK's Lunar Mission One Launches Crowdfunding Drive

moon_lunar_tower_bridge_london_reuters.jpg
A British space venture is giving ordinary citizens the chance to leave their mark on the moon in a decade's time while helping scientists scout a possible location for a permanent base there.
Lunar Mission One launched a crowdfunding drive on Wednesday to cover its start-up costs. By mid-morning organisers had raised around GBP 74,000 (approximately Rs. 71.8 lakhs) pounds, according to the Kickstarter website, towards an initial target of 600,000 pounds (approximately Rs. 5.82 crores) they aim to reach within a month.
More than 750 people signed up within hours, with funders asked to pledge at least GBP 60 (approximately Rs. 5,800) for a digital memory box in which their messages, pictures, videos and - via a strand of hair - DNA will be carried into space and then buried in a capsule on earth's nearest neighbour. Organisers will need several orders of magnitude more to recoup the total estimated project costs of GBP 500 million (approximately Rs. 4,854 crores), the bulk of which they hope to raise by the same method.
"Governments are finding it increasingly difficult to fund space exploration that is solely for the advancement of human knowledge and understanding as opposed to commercial return,"

New Polarising Filter Could Result in Brighter LCD Displays

Researchers led by an Indian-American have developed a polarising filter that can result in mobile device displays that last much longer on a single battery charge and cameras that can shoot in dim light.
Led by Utah University's Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor Rajesh Menon, electrical researchers created the filter by etching a silicon wafer with nanoscale pillars and holes using a focused gallium-ion beam, a university release said. Polarisers are indispensable in digital photography and LCD displays, but they block enormous amounts of light, wasting energy and making it more difficult to photograph in low light.
"This new concept in light filtering can perform the same function as a standard polariser but allows up to nearly 30 percent more light to pass through," said Menon.
Polarisers are widely used by photographers to reduce glare in the image. They also are used in LCD displays to regulate what light passes through to create images on the screen.
"When you take a picture and put the polarised filter on, you are trying to get rid of glare," Menon said. "But most polarisers will eliminate anywhere from to 60 to 70 percent of the light. You can see it with your eyes."
Yet with Menon's new polariser, much of the light that normally is reflected back is instead converted to the desired polarised state. The Utah researchers have been able to pass through about 74 percent of the light, though their goal is to eventually allow all of the light to pass through.
LCD displays on devices such as smartphones and tablets have two polarisers that ultimately throw away most of the light when working with the liquid crystal display. "If one can increase that energy efficiency, that is a huge increase on the battery life of your display. Or you can make your display brighter," Menon said

India to Launch Satellite for Saarc Region in 2016: Prime Minister Modi

Regional collaboration in space technology must be enhanced to achieve sustainable development in South Asia, according to leaders of Saarc member states. Addressing the inaugural session of the 18th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Summit in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his country was ready to develop a satellite specifically for the region by 2016.
"India will host a conference for all South Asian partners next year to strengthen our abilities to apply space technology to economic development and governance," he added.
Earlier this year, during a speech on the launch of a commercial satellite, Modi urged scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop a Saarc satellite and enlarge the footprint of India's satellite-based navigation system to serve the interests of the entire region.
Similarly, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa focused on enhancing "space diplomacy" to strengthen relations among the Saarc countries, Xinhua reported.
"The application of space technology to the areas of telecommunications and disaster management, will greatly benefit Saarc's social-economic growth," he said. The Sri Lankan president praised India for its progress in the field of space technology and welcomed Modi's proposal of developing a space satellite for Saarc.

Robots to Up-End the World of Work, for Good and Bad

wowwee_robot_ap.jpg
Robots and artificially intelligent devices will take over many jobs now done by people, and experts are divided as to whether their spread will do human society more good than harm.
The Pew Research Center said experts see a growing role for self-driving cars, delivery drones, robotic workers, smartphone-based assistants and even algorithmic journalism by 2025. But they are divided on whether these technological advances will be helpful, with 48 percent of respondents to Pew's survey saying they will destroy jobs and increase income inequality. Nevertheless, a slim majority said the technology will take over undesirable tasks and generate new kinds of human employment.
The report is not based on a randomized poll sample, but instead on an opt-in survey of people deemed experts or affiliated with certain organizations, taken between November 2013 and January 2014.
Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Internet Project, said experts see "the accelerating displacement of work that can be done more efficiently and cost-effectively" by robots.

Google's Latest: Spoons That Steady Tremors

Just in time for the holidays, Google is throwing its money, brain power and technology at the humble spoon.
Of course these spoons (don't call them spoogles) are a bit more than your basic utensil: using hundreds of algorithms, they allow people with essential tremors and Parkinson's Disease to eat without spilling.
The technology senses how a hand is shaking and makes instant adjustments to stay balanced. In clinical trials, the Liftware spoons reduced shaking of the spoon bowl by an average of 76 percent. Google got into the no-shake utensil business in September, acquiring a small, National of Institutes of Health-funded start up called Lift Labs for an undisclosed sum.
Other adaptive devices have been developed to help people with tremors - rocker knives, weighted utensils, pen grips.

E-Cigarettes Have 10 Times the Carcinogens as Regular Tobacco

e_cigarette_tray_reuters.jpg
E-cigarettes contain up to 10 times the amount of cancer-causing agents as regular tobacco, Japanese scientists said Thursday, the latest blow to an invention once heralded as less harmful than smoking.
A team of researchers commissioned by Japan's Health Ministry studied the vapour produced by "e-cigarettes" for signs of carcinogens, a media report said.
The electronic devices increasingly popular around the world, particularly among young people function by heating flavoured liquid, which often contains nicotine, into a vapour that is inhaled, much like traditional cigarettes, but without the smoke. Researchers found carcinogens such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in vapour produced by several types of e-cigarette liquid, TBS television reported.
Formaldehyde a substance found in building materials and embalming fluids was present at levels 10 times those found in the smoke from regular cigarettes, TBS said.
Researcher Naoki Kunugita and his team at the National Institute of Public Health submitted their report to the ministry on Thursday, the broadcaster said. Neither the scientist nor anyone from the health ministry were immediately available to confirm the report.
In common with many jurisdictions, Japan does not regulate e-cigarettes, which can be bought easily on the Internet. However, unlike in some Western countries, they are not readily available in shops.

Apple to Discontinue iPhone 5c Model Next Year

apple-iphone-5c-packaging-635.jpg
Apple is reportedly all set to discontinue the production of the iPhone 5c next year.
According to Taiwan's Industrial and Commercial Times report (via MacRumors), the production of the iPhone 5c is likely to stop in the middle of 2015, with Apple suppliers Wistron and Foxconn look to wind down production of the smartphone by that time.
The report did not suggest any specific reason behind the production withdrawal, and as yet there is no word from Apple about the report.
Notably, Apple follows the trend of discounting old devices when it launches new ones. Last year, when the company had launched the iPhone 5c alongside iPhone 5s, it had discontinued the iPhone 5 with immediate effect, even making sure that the device no longer remains on sale in markets worldwide.
Though Apple expected a lot from the colourful plastic iPhone 5c smartphone, are port in October last year said that the sales were rather disappointing.Verizon Communications Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo had said that iPhone 5c "undersold expectations" in the third quarter, while its pricier iPhone 5s was in short supply.

Gaana App for Android Adds Referral Program, Offers Free Talk Time

Popular music streaming service Gaana has announced the release of v5.0 of its Android app to coincide with the beginning of Android 5.0 Lollipop rollout.
Gaana 5.0 app for Android features a dark theme and album colour layout along with a new 'Playlists of the Hour' section. The section shows programmed audio playlists, which changes every few hours. The app also brings easier access to music videos and lyrics, language filters, improved bandwidth utilisation on 2G connections, and automatic syncing across different devices. The last feature is available only to subscribers of the paid Gaana+ service.
"Gaana is about music, and so we changed the interface to make the music as easy to find, and as prominent as possible," Saurabh Goel, Product Head of Gaana said in a press statement.
The firm has also announced its partnership with Paytm for a new referral programme that lets users earn extra talk time by inviting their friends to Gaana service. Users can invite their friends from WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, SMS, and email, earning upto Rs. 100 talk time. The updated Gaana app version 5.0 is available to download via Google Play. An updated version of the app with similar features will roll out to iOS and Windows Phone users soon, the company said.
It is worth noting that Bharti Airtel in September launched a new music streaming service with an OTT app that is carrier agnostic. Called Wynk Music, it is currently only available for Android and iOS, and offers an 'expert curated' library of 1.7 million regional and International songs across 8 languages (English, Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali).

Google Play Music Now Has a 'Particles' Visualiser for Its Web Player

Google's music-subscription service - Google Play Music - has added a HTML5 visualizer to its player on the Web, a feature we long seen in music player apps such as Windows Media Player and Winamp. The added visualiser to Google Play Music player for Web is called 'Particles.' To enable the visualizer, users can hover on the album art at the bottom left of the player while the song is playing, which will result in the pop up of two options - one for panning and zooming over the album art, and the second being the Particles visualizer.
The Android Police team, which first reported the new change on Saturday, also notes that Google might be rolling out the Particles visualiser in batches to the regions where the Google Play Music service works. Notably, Google doesn't offer the service (or the All Access subscription) in India.
For instance, a subscriber who opens the service on a smartphone on a Monday morning might be offered a playlist suited for commuting, going to the gym or getting motivated for work. Opening the app on Monday evening, though, might generate songs appropriate for eating dinner, studying or unwinding. The mood music also will be tailored to each listener's tastes, so a subscriber who already has signalled a preference for rock and an aversion for country music would be more likely to hear the Rolling Stones perform "Monkey Man" than "Dead Flowers" in their mixes.

Carousel Media Sharing App by Dropbox Now Available for iPad and the Web

dropbox_carousel_ipad_screenshots_official.jpg
Carousel photo and video sharing service by Dropbox, which was initially unveiled for Android smartphones and the iPhone is now also available for the iPad and the Web. Dropbox said on Thursday it will also release a version for Android tablets in two weeks.
The Carousel app by Dropbox is a standalone application that can backup and store devices' photos and videos to user's Dropbox account. It also allows them to share photos with people who do not have Carousel app installed. Users can also disable the backup option by going in to Carousel app Settings > Back Up Photos & Videos. Upon disabling, all the photos and videos on device will still appear in Carousel app but won't be backed up to user's Dropbox account.
The iOS app has been redesigned to become a universal (iPhone + iPad) app and a Web version has been added as well. The iOS app with an improved grid view and a newly designed lightbox that lets you double tap to zoom.
"The old grid view had a lot of white space in between photos and events that wasn't very aesthetically pleasing, so we created this new grid view that fills up all the white space by making some of your photos larger than others," Chris Lee, Carousel Product Manager, told TNW. "We particularly focus on the photos of people and make them extra big."

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Cannibalising iPad Usage, Suggests Pocket

iphone_6_webpage_generic.jpg
Data released on Wednesday have started the debate about whether Apple's new 'bigger than bigger' iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones have cannibalised the usage of iPad tablets.
The popular read-it-later app, Pocket, has revealed some interesting bits from the data it gleaned from users. It claims that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users are spending less time reading on their iPad tablets than previous generation iPhone users. For those unaware, the Pocket app allows users to save an article or webpage to read later. The data includes analysis of over 2 million articles and videos, with which the company claims it has "compared before-and-after behaviour for users who upgraded from an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s to an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus."
Comparing the overall time spent by users who upgraded to an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and also own an iPad to view content from the app, the Pocket adds, "Users with an iPhone 6 now read on their tablets 19 percent less during the week and 27 percent less over the weekend. Those with a 6 Plus are on their tablets 31 percent less during the week and 36 percent less over the weekend."
The data however suggests that owners of iPhones do read content on their iPad tablets during night. It adds, "Regardless of which iPhone they have, users still reach for their iPads around 9PM for some late-night, bedtime reading."

Skype for Android Update Fixes Chat Notification Bug, Bring New Features

Microsoft in its latest update for Skype for Android smartphones has finally taken care of one of the most complained about bugs dealing with the late delivery of chat notifications. The update additionally brings some new features.
Skype for Android, as a part of the update, now opens chat windows much faster, especially when opened from a notification. Notably, the improved window opening time was already introduced last month for iPhone users as a part of its version 5.7 app version. Picture-in-picture feature in Skype, which has been available for tablet devices for a while, has also reached Android smartphones. Android users would now be able to receive images from Skype for iPhone and other new clients. The text formats now additionally include Bold, Italics and Strike through formatting alongside native support for Hindi language. The updated app is available to download from Google Play.
In addition, after its last update for Office Online in April this year, Microsoft last week announced that Office Online users can now chat in real time while collaborating with others on a Word file or PowerPoint presentation. Users can simply click on the chat button and start conversing via Skype on their desktops or handsets. Chatting is still possible even after leaving the document. The update will be rolled out in coming weeks.
Microsoft in the month of November also made a number of vital announcements in order to keep its user base increasing. A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft started rolling out a beta version of Skype that lets people make Internet calls from web browsers, eliminating the need to install special applications on different platforms.

Five Siri Features That Android Doesn't Have

siri_storyimage.jpg
Siri is about as close as a virtual voice assistant can come to matching a real person. Any Apple user can tell you that Siri has a great personality, is unfailingly polite and can execute a bunch of actions on your iOS device - just be sure to ask politely. You can ask Siri to make phone calls, read out your email and even have conversations about its favourite films. On the other hand, we have to admit that Siri isn't even nearly as good at understanding Indian accents as Google Voice Search is. When we need to chat with Siri, we have to practice our best fake American or British accent.
Android users swear by Google Voice Search, which is great at understanding queries and showing you information you need before you even ask for it, thanks to Google Now. But there are still things that only Siri can do. Windows Phone users love Cortana, but the voice assistant hasn't yet been made available in India.
1. Teach Siri to pronounce names
If Siri isn't pronouncing any contact's name properly, say, "That's not how you pronounce it." Siri will then ask you to pronounce the name. Then it will show you three audio clips, each with a different pronunciation of the name. You can pick the one that's closest to the actual pronunciation. No matter how hard we tried, Siri had trouble pronouncing many Indian names. In that, it's just like a real person from another country who can't pronounce local names. Android users can also do this, but the process is more complicated. You have to go to contacts, then edit the entry, then add a field for phonetic name, before finally having to type in the name phonetically. It's definitely easier to do it Apple's way.
2. Post to Twitter/Facebook
If you've logged in to Facebook (Settings > Facebook) and Twitter (Settings > Twitter), you can ask Siri to post a status update or tweet. Just say, "Post to Facebook" followed by your message or, "Tweet" followed by what you want to post on Twitter.
3. Search recent tweets
Siri has a built-in Twitter search function, which you can use to look for recent tweets or just to display a list of your most recent tweets. Just say, "Search Twitter for" followed by your query. To see your tweets, say, "Show my tweets". Of course, you need to be logged into Twitter (Settings > Twitter) on your device for this to work.
4. Identify, buy songs
Siri now identifies songs via an integration with Shazam. Say, "Which song is this?" or "Name that tune". Siri will listen to the song and try to identify it. This works well with both English and Hindi songs. You can tap the Buy button next to the song or you can ask Siri to buy the song for you. Google has this feature too, but it is not active in India yet.
If any song is playing (or paused) in your music player, you can ask Siri to "Buy that song". It will search the iTunes Store for the song and you can buy it there
5. Weather
Any personal assistant worth its salt will be able to tell you the local temperature and show you a forecast. But you can ask Siri specific questions such as, "Is it cold outside?". It then answers your query and shows the day's forecast. Asking Google if it is cold outside had us listening to the song of the same name, which wasn't a total loss, though not what we had in mind.

Microsoft May Have Accidentally Revealed Acquisition of Acompli

Microsoft in a blank post published on the company's blog appears accidentally revealed the upcoming acquisition of an email app named Acompli.
First reported by Beta News, the blank post was written by Microsoft's Corporate Vice President Rajesh Jha with almost no content in the body and accidentally got pushed on the RSS feeds. The body just included "blank post please delete" all over the post. Interestingly, the text in the blank post's web address however read 'Microsoft acquires Acompli'.
Notably, there has been no confirmation of the acquisition by Microsoft or Acompli, as reported by Beta News and Techcrunch.
The latter publication speculates, "The chance that Microsoft wrote a blog post about an acquisition that wasn't far along doesn't seem high. No point in prepping a post with a URL if the deal isn't far along. So the Acompli deal is probably iced." For the uninitiated, Acompli offers mobile email app for both iOS and Android.

Apps That Ease Your Thanksgiving Travel Woes

waze_flightboard_app_screenshots_google_play.jpg
Traveling by plane, train or automobile can be a headache. Mixing in Thanksgiving can make it a throbbing migraine. Technology provides some pain relief in the form of apps to let you know which roads are clogged, what gate your flight leaves from and whether trains are running on time.
The American Automobile Association forecasts that the Wednesday through Sunday period will see more than 46 million Americans travel at least 50 miles from home - the most Thanksgiving road warriors since 2007. About nine in 10 are expected to drive - or be driven - with about 3.6 million flying.
Here are some ways to make the journey a bit less taxing.
Planes
FlightAware tracks not only your flight's status but also any delays or cancellations, even gate changes. Set it up for a specific trip and it will send alerts so you don't have to keep checking for changes. Seats matter, especially if you're traveling with kids. The ExpertFlyer app has a feature called "seat alert," which informs you when a seat you want to snag becomes available.
If you have the pleasure of a connecting flight, consider FlightBoard. Every five minutes, it updates with the latest from airport departure boards at over 3,000 airports worldwide. If you're picking up at the airport, it's one way to find out whether the flight will land on time. Or, if you want to keep it simple, get the app of the airline you're flying. That will typically let you do things such as get a boarding pass or - gulp - rebook your flight.
Trains
While Amtrak has an app that lets you make or change reservations and check the status of your train, local and regional public transit doesn't have the same range of resources as air travel.
At least 70 percent of larger transit agencies have apps that offer real-time travel information, according to Darnell Grisby, director of policy development and research at the American Public Transportation Association. As for using your phone to buy and manage tickets - that's not as common an option, but some agencies offer it.
Automobiles
Traffic apps are a familiar friend for many commuters. Some, such as Sigalert, offer color-coded highway maps - red for "jammed up," yellow for "slow," green for "full speed ahead." Sometimes the data that inform the maps are just outdated enough that they can lead a driver onto a freeway that may have been traffic-free five minutes ago, but now has a building bottleneck.
The popular app Waze tries to solve that problem by asking drivers to report traffic and other problems, which the app then shares with other users.

Teenagers Shifting From Facebook to Instant Messaging Apps

facebook_desktop_user_reuters.jpg
A study involving 170,000 Internet users across 32 countries has found that more and more teenagers are spending more time on instant messaging apps than on Facebook.
Nearly 66 percent of teenagers (aged 16-19) in the US and Britain said they were using Facebook less frequently.
While the teenagers are not off the social networking site completely, the interactions have dropped and the group is more passive about the site as a whole, revealed the new "Social Summary for Q3 2014" from market research firm GlobalWebIndex (GWI), with analysis also reported on its blog post '50 Percent of Teens Are Bored of Facebook'.
"Even though Facebook has more users, activity such as photo sharing and messaging has fallen off by 20 percentage points in the last two years," the findings showed. Nearly 30 percent of teenagers said they are not on Facebook as often because their friends have gone on Instagram and other messaging apps, StreetInsider.com reported.
The report found that although Facebook has a drop in active users, its Messenger is very popular among teenagers, even leaving WhatsApp behind as the most used messaging app. Snapchat turns out to be the real winner among teenagers.
