Google Play to Get Sponsored Search Results to Boost App Discovery

paid_search_google_play_google.jpg
Google is bringing paid or sponsored search results to Google Play the company said in a blog post on Thursday.
Much like how this works on Google Search, Google Play will throw up app search results clearly labelled as ads along with organic results.
The reason for this? To enhance app discovery. It's been a bone of contention for many app developers, some of whom have put their apps on third-party app stores which have less competition. With Google Play having the largest user base, it seems like a way for Google to keep developers within its system. "App discovery plays a critical role in driving your continued success, and over the past year Google has provided best practices to enhance app discovery and engagement, as well as app promotion tools to get the most out of search and display advertising for developers," said Michael Siliski, Product Management Director, Google Play in the blog post.
"We are always looking for new ways to help you get your apps in front of potential new users. That's why, in the next few weeks, we will begin piloting sponsored search results on Google Play, bringing our unique expertise in search ads to the store."
What this also means is, Google stands to earn more revenue from Google Play above and beyond its 30 percent cut for every app transaction. The timing is shrewd with its burgeoning presence. The blog post also mentions that Google Play reaches over a billion users on Android in 190 countries and paid out $7 billion to developers last year.

Apple Faces Second Suit From Victorious Patent Firm

apple_red_booklet_ap.jpg
Fresh off a $532.9 million jury win against Apple Inc, a Texas company is again suing the tech giant, this time over the same patents' use in devices introduced after the original case was under way.
Smartflash LLC aims to make Apple pay for using the patent licensing firm's technology without permission in devices not be included in the previous case, such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and the iPad Air 2. The trial covered older Apple devices.
On Tuesday, a jury in federal court in Tyler, Texas found that Apple wilfully violated three Smartflash patents with devices that use its iTunes software. The patents relate to accessing and storing downloaded songs, videos and games.
The new complaint was filed on Wednesday night in the same court in Tyler, where Smartflash is also based and which over the past decade has become a focus for patent litigation. Smartflash licenses its patents but does not make products itself.
"Smartflash filed the complaint to address products that came out too far into the last proceedings to have been included," Smartflash's attorney, Brad Caldwell, told Reuters on Thursday. "Apple cannot claim they don't know about these patents or understand that they are infringing. A diligent jury has already rejected those arguments."A representative from Apple could not immediately be reached for comment.

Interestingly, 'Spring Forward' is a term used in timekeeping to indicate the setting of clocks an hour ahead at the start of Daylight Savings Time in the Spring. Along with the date, the name of the event certainly tips the firm will launch the Apple Watch on March 9.The Cupertino-based giant announced some of the major features of the Apple Watch at its September event; though details are still left to be disclosed, such as the pricing options, official release date, battery details and others. At September launch last year, Apple revealed that the Apple Watch would be priced starting $349 and would be available in "early 2015."

India to Soon Have Better Earth Observation Satellites

India will soon have satellites with improved earth observation capability, said space agency chief A.S.Kiran Kumar in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
"The future of earth observation relies on three factors - continuity and improvement of the operational constellation of satellites, sustained observation of all climate variables and global co-operation for comparing observation data," the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman said while speaking at the International Conference on Climate Change and Disaster Management at Kovalam. Another speaker at the conference was Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of French space agency Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, who urged coordination of space missions and pooling of resources for stepping up space-based observation of climate change phenomena.
Tanja Masson-Zwaan, president, International Institute of Space Law (IISL), stressed the importance of space technology in solving issues connected to climate change.
"Today climate change and disaster management are perhaps the most important issues being faced."
The event is being jointly organised by the IAA, Isro, IISL, India's earth sciences ministry and the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.

CommonFloor Launches Retina, a Virtual Reality Take on Real Estate

Real-estate portal CommonFloor has unveiled a new app called CommonFloor Retina, which can be used to view new real-estate projects in a spherical 360-degree virtual reality perspective. The new app is available to download for free on the Google Play store.
The set-up will, however, need for the user to have access to a Google Cardboardkit, and only works with selected Android devices, as the app needs certain hardware specifications to properly run the app. According to CommonFloor, it works best on Google Nexus smartphones. The demo unit that we had a chance to play with was running on a Google Nexus 5. CommonFloor will itself be selling the Cardboard kits on its own portal and through Flipkart for Rs. 999.
This does sound a bit tedious and unlikely to really generate an audience, but CommonFloor also plans to have builders keep the VR kits at their site offices or expos and conferences, to give potential buyers a virtual view of what the project will look like on completion. Sales associates can even carry the kit with them when they go out on field sales calls, giving buyers a better look at what they're being pitched.
Over 20 projects in Bangalore have already signed up, and the app has all of their plans available to download. CommonFloor plans to expand to cities all over India, adding projects to the system. Images and graphical representations for the app are sourced either from the builders, or generated using CommonFloor's own hardware.

Google Buys .app Top-Level Domain for $25 Million

macbook_picjumbo.jpg
The .app top-level domain is now owned by Google. The search giant bid a whopping $25 million to buy rights to the domain. Top-level domains are a part of every URL. Some examples are .com, .org and .net. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been making a host of new top-level domains available. Some of these domains have been auctioned off at a big price. For example, Amazon bought the .buy domain for over $4.5 million. The full list of auctioned domains can be found here (via 9to5Google).
Google's $25 million bid is currently the highest price for any top-level domain. (TLD) This indicates that the company may have big plans for the domain. Google hasn't yet announced whether it will sell .app domains, but it recently announced plans to show sponsored search results in Google Play. The company could use the .app TLD as a monetisation strategy on Google Play.
In a blog post in 2012, Google had indicated its plans to add domains to its portfolio. The post reads, "We decided to submit applications for new TLDs, which generally fall into four categories: Our trademarks, like .google; Domains related to our core business, like .docs; Domains that will improve user experience, such as .youtube, which can increase the ease with which YouTube channels and genres can be identified; [and] Domains we think have interesting and creative potential, such as .lol."

Only 38 Percent of Global Population Has Used the Internet: Facebook

Only 38 percent of people worldwide have connected to the Internet at least once in their lives, according to a study published by Facebook's Internet.org initiative.
The study, titled "State of Connectivity: 2014 - A Report on Global Internet Access" and published Wednesday, examines the current state of global Internet connectivity and looks at who is connected, who is not and why. The study put the number of Internet users in early 2015 at three billion people, although that still means that more than 60 percent of the global population has never connected to the Web from a computer or mobile device.
The disparity is wide between the developed world and emerging economies, as 78 percent of the population in the former is online compared with just 32 percent of the latter.
The study also found that the rate of growth in Internet adoption slowed in 2014 for the fourth year in a row and has fallen from a growth rate of 14.7 percent in 2010 to just 6.6 percent last year.
Because the rate of Internet adoption is slowing, the number of people online will not reach four billion until 2019, according to the study.Lack of affordability and limited relevant content in the unconnected population's primary language are the two main barriers to Internet access that must be addressed, the study said.

Google to Start Giving Mobile-Friendly Sites Higher Search Rankings

Google on Thursday announced that the company is making two important changes in its mobile search algorithms to help users discover more mobile-friendly content. First, mobile-friendly websites will receive a higher ranking in mobile search results from April 21, and second, more content from within apps will be visible in mobile search results for signed-in users, from Thursday.
"When it comes to search on mobile devices, users should get the most relevant and timely results, no matter if the information lives on mobile-friendly web pages or apps. As more people use mobile devices to access the internet, our algorithms have to adapt to these usage patterns," noted company on its Webmaster Central blog.
The search giant noted that it is expanding use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal, and with this coming into effect for mobile searches in all languages worldwide, it will certainly have a "significant impact" in Google Search results. The company had started displaying mobile friendly labels for websites in mobile search results back in November.
The second change, app indexing, has already been implemented this week.Google says mobile searches will now display more information from apps that have been indexed by the company to users who have the app installed, and are currently signed-in to Google. The search giant has also provided a guide for developers on how to ensure their apps get indexed.
