Boeing Eyes Satellite Deal With Tech Giant This Year

Boeing on Monday said it could clinch a deal this year to build a high-throughput communications satellite for top technology companies such as Google Inc, Amazon, Facebook or Apple.

Jim Simpson, vice president of business development and chief strategist for Boeing Network and Space Systems, told Reuters the big technology firms were keen to expand Internet access around the world to help them grow."The real key to being able to do these type of things is ultra high-throughput capabilities, where we're looking at providing gigabytes, terrabytes, pedabytes of capability," Simpson told Reuters after a panel at the Satellite 2015 conference.
Simpson declined to give specific details about discussions with the tech companies. He said the challenge was to drive down the cost of satellite communications to be more in line with terrestrial costs, which would help the tech firms justify the expense of building a larger communications satellite.
But if sufficient demand failed to materialise, the tech companies would be left with the cost of "a really high performance satellite," he said.
Boeing and other satellite makers have been eyeing a new source of demand from technology firms such as Google and Amazon, given their interest in reaching the estimated 70 percent of the globe that still lacks access to the Internet.

Windows 10 to Use Less Storage Space Than Previous Iterations: Microsoft

windows_10_less_footprint_storage_breakdown_blog.jpg
Microsoft on Monday revealed more details about the upcoming Windows 10 operating system, explaining how the OS has a more compact footprint compared to previous iterations due to its new compression method for system files coupled with improved Windows recovery that will give more storage space to users.
In a blog post, the Redmond-based tech firm detailed that its new system file compression algorithm in Windows 10 saves 1.5GB in 32-bit Windows systems and 2.6GB in 64-bit systems. Microsoft adds that Windows 10 phones will also use a similar compression algorithm to give comparable storage savings.
The firm states that the OS comes with smart compression technology that assesses the computer's performance to choose which compression factor, or if compression is to be used at all, to use when upgrading to Windows 10. OEMs will carry out their own suitability assessment to enable system file compression in new Windows 10 machines.
The firm added that compression of system files in every situation may not be ideal as it can also adversely affect the device. Some of the factors taken in to consideration to determine if compression is needed or not are the device's RAM, the type of hard disk, and the speed with which the CPU can run the decompression algorithm. The firm also detailed the use of compression for Windows Store apps. "Not only does Windows 10 intelligently use compression to keep the system footprint efficient, Windows 10 also uses compression to keep store apps' footprint small," the blog stated.

Microsoft Launches Preview Versions of Office 2016 and Skype for Business

microsoft_office_logo_reuters.jpg
As announced in January, Microsoft on Monday announced the release of IT Pro and Developer Preview version of Office 2016. The firm also announced the release of the technical preview of Skype for Business.
Microsoft says the Office 2016 IT Pro and Developer Preview still misses out on some of features and that consumers should look out for the final version of Office 2016, which will be shipping "later this year." Office 2016 has been available in private preview for a few months now, but has now been made available to commercial Office 365 customers.
The Redmond-based tech firm detailed some of the features included in the Office 2016 IT Pro and Developer Preview. It has added Data Loss Protection (DLP) classification and policies for Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. DLP was previously limited to Exchange, Outlook, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint services.
As Microsoft explains, DLP allows IT admins to create and manage policies for content authoring and document sharing. As for end users, they will see policy tips or sharing restrictions whenever the policy is violated. A number of technical improvements have also been made in the Outlook application found in the IT Pro and Developer Preview of Office 2016, namely multi-factor authentication, improved email delivery performance, lean storage footprint, improved search, foreground network calls, and the new MAPI-HTTP protocol.
Also new with the Office 2016 preview are new deployment features for IT professionals, like better network traffic management, flexible update management, simplified activation management, and enhanced distribution management.

Nintendo NX Game Platform Announced, May Replace Wii U Console

At the press conference announcing DeNA and Nintendo's partnership, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata put to rest speculation that Nintendo's future is completely mobile. He stated that the company is working on its next piece of gaming hardware codenamed NX.Wii_U_Nintendo.jpg
"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems", he said.
"On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before."
"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business", Iwata adds, "let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'."
More information on the new game platform will be announced next year. The prime candidate for a replacement is the Wii U (pictured above), Nintendo's home console that has not been doing as well as the company had anticipated.
Furthermore, both companies outlined their plans to develop a multi-device membership service similar to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
"Nintendo and DeNA expect to develop a new core system compatible with a variety of devices including PCs, smartphones and tablets as well as Nintendo's dedicated video game systems, and are to jointly develop a membership service utilising this system, with a launch targeted for the fall of 2015. The companies expect to further enhance their customer relationships through the membership service," reads the press release.

YouTube Cards Launched to Replace Annotations, Also Work on Mobile

youtube_cards_official.jpg
YouTube on Monday announced a new product called "Cards" that is replacing annotations, which previously appeared on a running video asking users to subscribe a channel or to click through to watch another video. The video platform also announced YouTube for Artists, which brings tools and promotional programs to help musicians better connect with their audience.
YouTube calls the new Cards feature as "an evolution of annotations." The Cards help video creators inform viewers about other videos, playlists, websites and more, much like what annotations did. YouTube claims that the Cards "look as beautiful as your videos, are available anytime during the video and yes, they finally work on mobile."
With the rollout of Cards, YouTube has fixed one of the limitations of annotations as Cards will work on desktop as well as mobiles. Interestingly, the new Cards do not pop up by themselves, and users can only see a Card's content when they click on the 'info' symbol that appears when a user hovers the cursor over the video on desktop, or when the player controls are visible on mobile.

Notably, Firefox partnered Yahoo last year to make the Google rival its default search engine in the US.First spotted by Search Engine Land, Google has placed a big message above its search results asking Firefox users to switch to Google as the browser's default search engine. The message shown in a screenshot above states "Switch your default search engine to Google" along with "Learn how" and "No, thanks" options. The move has been termed as a desperate attempt by Google to attract Firefox users. The request box is not visible in India. The report adds that since the Firefox-Yahoo deal in November last year, Yahoo's search share rose from 8.6 percent in November to 10.9 percent in January, citing StatCounter figures. According to the same firm, Firefox has a market share of 16 percent in the US. As per comScore, Yahoo's market share in the US rose from 10.2 percent in November last year to 11.8 percent in December.
In November, at the time of Firefox-Yahoo deal, Mozilla's chief Chris Beard stated that "We are adopting a more local and flexible approach to increase choice and innovation on the Web, with new and expanded search partnerships by country." The decision to switch to Yahoo came as a decade-long agreement with Google neared its end and Mozilla evaluated its options, he said. The partnership with Yahoo is set to last five years.

Users with devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop are able to use this feature through Google Search voice commands or via 'Ok Google' hotword detection.
