Intel Cuts Revenue Forecast as Desktop Demand Weakens

Intel Corp slashed nearly $1 billion from its first-quarter revenue forecast as small businesses put off upgrading their personal computers, sending the chipmaker's shares down more than 5 percent.intel_official.jpg
Fewer companies than Intel had expected replaced desktop PCs running on outdated Microsoft operating systems, leading to weak demand for its chips. Intel also cited "challenging" macroeconomic and currency conditions, particularly in Europe.

Though dominant in the market for chips used in PCs, Intel has been slower than rivals such as Qualcomm Inc to adjust in recent years to the growing popularity of smartphones.

"The macro environment is not robust enough for people to upgrade their PCs the way they normally would," Topeka Capital Markets analyst Suji De Silva said.
Intel said on Thursday that it expected first-quarter revenue of $12.8 billion, plus or minus $300 million - about 7 percent lower than its earlier forecast of $13.7 billion, plus or minus $500 million.

Google Opens First Ever Retail Store in London

On the day it unveiled a separate online destination for its hardware, Google also opened its first self-branded retail store called the Google Shop. Located as a "shop in shop" within Currys PC World on Tottenham Court Road in London, UK, the store will let customers try out and buy Google's Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebook laptops, and the Chromecast.google_shop_currys_vr_tour_app.jpg
Customers can also interact with representatives to learn about Googleproducts and services, and regular classes and events will include tutorials on online security, Virtual Space Camps for children, and Open House events for teachers to test educational tools.

Google had previously opened a Chromezone within Currys PC World in 2011, mini-storefronts that were expanded to other outlets in the UK, but according to The Telegraph these didn't see much traction. The Mountain View giant plans to open two more Google Shops in the UK, in London and Essex.
"The pace of innovation of the devices we all use is incredible, yet the way we buy them has remained the same for years. With the Google shop, we want to offer people a place where they can play, experiment and learn about all of what Google has to offer; from an incredible range of devices to a totally-connected, seamless online life... We think it's a genuinely unique try-before-you-buy experience," Elias added.

Nasa Says Jupiter's Largest Moon Ganymede Definitely Has an Ocean

The Galileo spacecraft, which arrived at Jupiter in 1995, had already detected a possible magnetic field on Ganymede.
The Hubble Space Telescope confirmed that discovery by observing changes in the aurorae around the celestial body.nasa_showing_juno_spacecraft_orbiting_jupiter_nasa_via_afp.jpg
"Since the 1970s, there were speculations and models that Ganymede could possess an ocean," said Joachim Saur of the University of Cologne in Germany.
"We do not have these ambiguities anymore," he told reporters.
The latest findings from Hubble "provide the best evidence to date for the existence of an ocean on Ganymede."
Researchers found that Jupiter's own magnetic field interacts with Ganymede's, causing a rocking motion in the aurorae. This motion is reduced by magnetic friction applied by the presence of Ganymede's underground ocean.
Heidi Hammel, executive vice president of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, said the approach showed that a space telescope could be "a powerful tool" to make inferences about the interior of a moon.
Already, scientists know there are oceans beneath surfaces of Jupiter's moon Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus. Jupiter's moon Callisto is believed to have subterranean water as well.

"Hubble observations have now confirmed the presence of a salty, electrically conducting ocean under the crust of Ganymede, and so when the JUICE mission ultimately goes into orbit around Ganymede it will have a very, very rich and exciting science mission," Hammel said.
Much remains to be learned about the temperature and depth of Ganymede's ocean.

IBM Said to Be Looking at Adopting Bitcoin Tech For Major Currencies

The objective is to allow people to transfer cash or make payments instantaneously using this technology without a bank or clearing party involved, saving on transaction costs, the person said. The transactions would be in an open ledger of a specific country's currency such as the dollar or euro, said the source, who declined to be identified because of a lack of authorization to discuss the project in public.
The blockchain - a ledger, or list, of all of a digital currency's transactions - is viewed as Bitcoin's main technological innovation, allowing users to make payments anonymously, instantly, and without government regulation.

IBM is one of a number of tech companies looking to expand the use of the blockchain technology beyond Bitcoin, the digital currency launched six years ago that has spurred a following among investors and tech enthusiasts.
The company has been in informal discussions about a blockchain-tied cash system with a number of central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, the source said. If central banks approve the concept, IBM will build the secure and scalable infrastructure for the project.
IBM media relations office did not respond to Reuters emails about this story and the Fed declined to comment.
However, there are signs that central banks are already thinking about the innovations that could arise through digital currency systems. The Bank of England, in a report in September 2014, described the blockchain's open ledger as a "significant innovation" that could transform the financial system more generally.

Additionally, the Dropbox update for Android brings in-document search within pdf files, apart from Microsoft PowerPoint and Word files. The blog explains, "If you want to find a specific clause in your thirty-page apartment lease, just pull up the file and search for a keyword. The app will return a list of all the places that keyword appears in the lease document, so you can find the best result and go straight to that section."
Dropbox last month announced a new feature for both its Android and iOS apps, aimed at helping improve the productivity of users. The new function allowed users to open shared Dropbox links within the Dropbox Android and iOS apps. Previously, the shared links opened in the mobile browser, consuming more time.

US Senate Committee Advances 'Threat-Sharing' Cyber-Security Bill

The US Senate Intelligence Committee voted 14-1 on Thursday to approve a bill intended to enhance information sharing between private companies and intelligence agencies about cyber-security threats.
The panel's approval cleared the way for a vote in the full Senate on the measure, which would extend some legal liability protection to companies to make it easier for them to share data with the government to help prevent and respond to cyber-attacks.
Some privacy advocates opposed the bill, worrying that it would do too little to prevent more data collection by the National Security Agency and other . Such surveillance has come under scrutiny since 2013 disclosures by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.hackers_at_work_reuters.jpg
Privacy concerns were cited by the only member of the committee who voted against the bill, Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon. "It's a surveillance bill by another name," Wyden said in a statement.
The measure was partly inspired by recent cyber-attacks on major corporations, including Sony. Several major firms, including Microsoft, Lockheed Martin and Morgan Stanley, had pushed for a threat-sharing bill, according to media reports.

New Microwave Tech Paves Way for Space-Based Solar Power Generation

Paving the way for generating space-based solar power, Japanese researchers have succeeded in transmitting electrical power wirelessly to a pinpoint target using microwaves.
The team at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa) transformed 1.8 kilowatts of electric power into microwaves and transmitted it with accuracy to a receiver located 55 meters away, Wall Street Journal reported.
isro_twitter.jpg
A receiver set up on Earth with an approximately three-km radius can create up to one gigawatt of electricity - about the same as one nuclear reactor.
Researchers "are aiming for practical use in the 2030s", posted Jaxa researcher Yasuyuki Fukumuro on its website.
Satellite-based solar panels can capture the energy around-the-clock and are not affected by weather conditions, the report added.
