Net Neutrality Supporters Downrate Flipkart App After Co-Founder Supports Airtel Zero

flipkart_ratings.jpg
The announcement of Airtel Zero - a platform where businesses can pay Airtel to offer users free data access to their apps - has turned many people off Flipkart. The online retailer was reputedly one of the first partners for Airtel Zero, and Flipkart CEO Sachin Bansal has been one of the few prominent persons to speak out in support of zero-rating plans like Airtel Zero.
In retaliation, many users have taken to giving one-star ratings to Flipkart's apps onAndroid and iOS. To make sure that the message is not lost, people also mention net neutrality in their reviews.
On Google Play if you look at the newest reviews, then you can see that seven of the ten latest reviews all bring up net neutrality. In iTunes, the latest ten reviews all mention net neutrality.
The issue of net neutrality has been gaining visibility in India in the last few months, starting when Airtel first announced a special data rate for Skype calls. The company back-pedalled on this after user outrage, saying it would instead wait for a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) consultation paper on regulation of apps before making any plans.
Since then, the first draft of the Trai paper was released, seeking views on the framework. The draft had several issues, from vague language to discussing issues unrelated to telecom.

In China, Knock-Off Apple Watches Have Their Own Fans

apple_watch_look_alike_reuters.jpg
Lining the glass display cases of Shenzhen's giant tech malls, knock-off versions of Apple Inc's smartwatch were on sale at many stalls, with some Chinese consumers eager to snap them up for a fraction of the cost of the original.
"It came on sale in mid-March and has been constantly out of stock," said one imitation Apple Watch seller who declined to give his name. "On average we sell around 40 a day. Some customers just came and bought five or more at a time."
The mimic Watches, built on Google Inc's operating system, don't need a separate smartphone to work, said one merchant. At her store, one was retailing for CNY 360 ($58) - around one eighth of the cost of Apple's cheaper Watch models.
One version used a SIM card, could make calls, send messages, browse the Internet and take pictures, she said.
On Friday, Apple, the world's most valuable technology company, started previewing the Apple Watch, its first new gadget line since former CEO Steve Jobs died in 2011. Customers in China and elsewhere will be able to buy it from April 24.

Alibaba Forms Automotive, 'Smart Living' Business Units

alibaba_night_reuters.jpg
China's Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, the world's biggest e-commerce company, has formed an automotive unit and a 'smart living' division in the past week, the firm said on Friday, as it ramps up its cloud computing, hardware and big data operations.
Alibaba, like many rival Chinese tech firms, is racing to introduce Internet and computing capabilities to various kinds of everyday products, ranging from televisions and home appliances to cars.
This has the $214-billion (roughly Rs. 13,34,972 crores) company pitched against rivals like social networking and online entertainment giant Tencent Holdings Inc, search leader Baidu Inc, e-commerce competitor JD.com Inc and hotshot smartphone makerXiaomi Inc.
In this packed field, China's online shopping titan is banking on its big data analysis and cloud computing abilities to provide an edge, as it looks to repeat the successes it has seen in overall e-commerce with more specialised categories.

Microsoft Office Remote Lets Users Control Presentations via Android Devices

microsoft_office_remote_official.jpg
Microsoft on Thursday launched a new app that lets you control Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on your Bluetooth-enabled PC from an Android smartphone.
The app, dubbed Microsoft Office Remote, lets users turn their Android smartphone (Android 4.0.3 and higher) into a smart remote that interacts with Microsoft Office on the PC.
The Office Remote app, as the name suggests lets users remotely manage Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on their Android smartphone from across the room.
The app requires Microsoft Office 2013 or later version installed on the PC, and does not work with Office 2013 RT or earlier versions of Office. To connect the two (smartphone and PC), a desktop add-on for Microsoft Office Remote app must be installed on the PC. The two devices then need to be paired over Bluetooth.
For PowerPoint presentations, the Office Remote app for Android lets users effectively 'laser point' by using touch on their Android smartphone. Other features for PowerPoint in the app are next slide preview; playing and pausing embedded audio and video files, as well as viewing slide thumbnails, speaker notes, presentation timer and slide numbers.

Ola Reportedly in Fresh Funding Talks; May Raise Up to Rs. 2,500 Crores

ola_cabs_generic_official.jpg
App-based taxi aggregator Ola is in talks to raise fresh funding of up to $400 million (about Rs. 2,500 crores) from a clutch of investors including DST Global, sources said.
Ola is locked in intense negotiations over the new round of funding as investors are closely "studying the firm's future plans," sources close to the development said.
This "may take a while" however, they said, adding that while there is "no doubt" that investors are interested in the firm but they are also considering various issues.
"They want to know Ola's plans on how they intend to retain and expand their driver base, considering that payment of commission to the drivers is a huge burden on any company's reserves," they said.
Another area that investors want clarity on is how the firm plans to expand the food delivery services and the impact on the firm's balance sheets, they added.
Ola declined to comment on the developments.
"So they are interested in the firm, but they are closely studying the growth and future prospects. TaxiForSure was taking a big hit in maintaining its fleet of cabs and paying commission to drivers. So, the investors are studying Ola's
plans on how it intends to deal with such issues," the sources said.

Apple Watch Preview Sees Strong Turnout With Shoppers Eager for Closer Look

apple_watch_preview_australia_afp.jpg
Consumers flocked to Apple Inc's stores around the world on Friday to get the first close-up look at the tech giant's smartwatch, which the company expects will be its next runaway hit.
The Apple Watch, CEO Tim Cook's first new major product and the company's first foray into the personal luxury goods market, was available for pre-order online and to try out in stores -- but not to take home.
On April 24, consumers will be able to buy it online or by appointment in shops including trendy fashion boutiques in Paris, London and Tokyo, part of Apple's strategy of positioning the wearable computer as a must-have accessory.
Testing Apple's mastery of consumer trends, the watch is an untried concept for the California-based company. It straddles a technology market accustomed to rapid obsolescence and luxury goods whose appeal lies in their enduring value.
Before the Paris Apple store opened at 0900 local time, about 100 people were queuing outside. Staff cheered and applauded the first customers, most of them men aged under 30.
"I have everything from Apple so now I need to get the watch," said 19-year-old Jeremy Dugue wearing an Armani leather jacket after ordering the stainless steel model at 1,149 euros.
The Apple Watch sport starts at $349 (roughly Rs. 21,000) while the standard version comes in at $549 (roughly Rs. 34,000) in the U.S. High-end "Edition" watches with 18-karat gold alloys are priced from $10,000 (roughly Rs. 6 lakhs) and go as high as $17,000 (roughly Rs. 10.5 lakhs).

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Teased; Game Modes, Setting Leaked

cod_blop3_activision.jpeg
Few things in life are as predictable and consistent as the Sun rising in the East and Apple releasing a new phone every year. To add to that scarce list is the expectation of new Call of Duty game each year.
Usually out in November each year, it seems that Activision, the publisher of the series, is just warming up the hype machine, letting loose a teaser for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Though the company didn't say much, a detailed description has been unearthed from the website's source code:
"Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is the first title for next-gen hardware in the critically acclaimed Black Ops series. Developed by Treyarch, the award-winning creator of the two most-played games in Call of Duty history.

Female CEOs Severely Under-Represented on Google Image Search, Finds Study

google_search_reuters.jpg
Did you even notice how many female faces you see when you search for the word "CEO" in Google Images search? Try and the first woman CEO to appear is not the PepsiCo's Indra Nooyi or ICICI Bank's Chanda Kochchar but an animated figure named "CEO Barbie"!
The gender bias is clearly visible because women are significantly under-represented in Google Image search results across all professions, reveal researchers from the University of Washington (UW).
"A number of the top images depicting women as construction workers are models in skimpy little costumes with a hard hat posing suggestively on a jackhammer. You get things that nobody would take as professional," said study co-author Cynthia Matuszek, assistant professor from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
The study compared the percentages of women who appeared in the top 100 Google Images search results for different occupations - from bartender to chemist to welder.
In some jobs, the discrepancies were pronounced.
