Discovery Channel Founder Launches Non-Fiction Video Streaming Service

discovery_curiositystream_official.jpg
Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks on Wednesday launched a subscription streaming service for fans of science, technology and history, with the goal of dominating the nonfiction category in on-demand, online video.
"I've been dreaming and scheming about this for over 20 years," Hendricks said in an interview.
To pursue the project, Hendricks retired in 2014 from Discovery Communications Inc, which operates the Discovery Channel and other networks that are sold in bundles through cable television operators.
"This needs to be independent of the legacy business," he said. "It's really difficult to just break ranks and threaten your existing revenue stream."
CuriosityStream costs $3 a month for standard resolution or $6 a month for high-definition. A sharper-definition option, known as 4K, is planned for later this year.
The service is available in the United States and will expand worldwide over five years.
Like other Internet-delivered video, CuriosityStream will compete for viewers in a sea of online content as networks like Time Warner Inc's HBO and CBS jump into the streaming mix. Apple Inc also is in talks with some broadcasters about an online service, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
Programming on CuriosityStream includes short videos of less than eight minutes and longer documentary-style series that were produced for the service or acquired from partners such as British Broadcasting Corp or Japanese broadcaster NHK. "Destination Pluto" follows a team that sent a space probe to the planet. Another series features a photographer's interviews with celebrities such as Ray Charles and Martin Scorsese.

LG L90 Dual Reportedly Receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop Update in India

lg_l90_dual_front_website.jpg
LG's budget smartphone, the L90 Dual, has reportedly started receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update in India. The OTA update is expected to gradually reach other regions and other recent L-series devices gradually.
The update version V20a-MAR-01-2015 weighs 780MB in size, according to a user report(via GSMArena). While the changelog mentions nothing besides "Android OS Upgrade", it is safe to assume that the update would bring Google's Material Design mantra to the smartphone, mixed with LG's own Optimus UX.
Apart from Material Design, Android 5.0 Lollipop features an improved notification system; Kill Switch and improved security; improved hardware keyboard accessory support (including support for multilingual, emoji input, search key, and improved app and system key chords), support for 15 new languages (including Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu); improved accessibility features (such as text contrast boost, colour inversion, and enhanced colour differentiation); improved audio, video, and camera capabilities, and improved Internet connectivity everywhere apart from more powerful Bluetooth low energy capabilities.
Launched in March last year, the LG L90 Dual runs Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box and was the first L Series III device to offer Knock Code, which is company's evolution of the KnockON feature that first debuted last year in the LG G2.

Run Pirated Windows? Even You'll Get Windows 10 for Free, Says Microsoft

microsoft_windows_10_event_official.jpg
With the announcement of making Windows 10 available to 190 countries and 111 languages this summer, Microsoft has also surprised everyone with saying that its promised free Windows 10 upgrade will be also be given to users of non-genuineWindows 7 and higher operating systems.
Terry Myerson, who runs Microsoft's operating systems unit, announced the plan at the WinHEC technology conference in Shenzhen, China.
"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," he said in a telephone interview with Reuters. The plan is to "re-engage" with the hundreds of millions of users of Windows in China, he said, without elaboration.
Microsoft in January had said it would offer free upgrades to Windows 10 for users of Windows 7 and higher operating systems in an attempt to hold onto users and make up for lost revenue by selling services such as Office over the Internet. At that time without further clarification it was expected the free upgrade offer would be limited to users of genuine Windows software.
The statement further added, "Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade."

Nasa Orbiter Captures Brightest Recorded Explosion on Moon

nasa_lunar_crater_official.jpg

This bright flash was recorded by researchers at Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville.
Comparing the actual size of the crater to the brightness of the flash will help validate impact models, the US space agency said in a statement.
The crater itself is small, measuring 61.7 feet in diameter, but its influence is large. Debris excavated by the sudden release of energy flew for hundreds of metres.More than 200 related surface changes up to 30 km away were noted, said the report published in the journal Icarus.
The impact crater is one of thousands of craters being mapped by the instrument.
The LRO team is going back to images taken in the first year or two and comparing them with recent images.
Called temporal pairs, these before/after images enable the search for a range of surface changes, including new impact craters formed between the time the first and second images were acquired.
Launched on June 18, 2009, LRO has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the moon.

Nasa Says Bright Spots on Dwarf Planet Could Be Active Ice

A pair of bright spots that glimmer inside an impact crater on the asteroid Ceres could be some kind of icy plume, new images from Nasa's Dawn spacecraft have revealed.
The images show the spots at changing angles as the asteroid rotates in and out of sunlight.
"What is amazing is that you can see the feature while the rim is still in the line of sight," said lead researcher Andreas Nathues, planetary scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Gottingen, Germany.
The pictures reveal the spots even when they are near the edge of Ceres, when the sides of the impact crater would normally block the view of anything confined to the bottom.nasa_dawn_spacecraft_near_ceres_official.jpg
The fact that something is visible at all suggests that the feature must rise relatively high above the surface.
At dawn on Ceres, the spots appear bright. By dusk, they seem to fade, said a report in the scientific journal Nature.
"That could mean sunlight plays an important role as, for instance, by heating up ice just beneath the surface and causing it to blast off in some kind of plume or other feature," the scientists said.
Ceres is believed to be made of at least one-quarter ice, more so than most asteroids.
Dawn's goal is to figure out where that ice resides and what role it plays in shaping the asteroid's surface.
"The big question is whether Ceres has an active region - or more than one," Nathues noted.

Solar-Powered Aircraft Takes Off From Varanasi, Headed to Myanmar

solar_impulse_2_ap_7.jpg
Solar Impulse 2 took off from the Indian holy city of Varanasi Thursday for Myanmar, its fourth flight after embarking on a landmark journey to circumnavigate the globe powered solely by the sun.
The single-seater aircraft took off at 5.22 am (2352 GMT) for what is expected to be a 20-hour journey south of the Himalayas to Mandalay, the second-largest city of Myanmar.
The plane had arrived in Varanasi on Wednesday from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state for an overnight stopover.
Pilot Bertrand Piccard was at the controls Thursday morning, taking over from fellow Swiss aviator Andre Borschberg.
"Mission mode on, now is time to focus for the flight ahead," Piccard tweeted along with a picture of the holy Ganges river that flows through Varanasi.
The plane's last stop in the city of Ahmedabad was mired by bureaucratic delays, with Piccard voicing his frustration over tedious paperwork.
Piccard said their flight to Varanasi had been delayed by five days thanks to administrative hurdles the team faced in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state.
An airport official in Ahmedabad, however, blamed the hold up on Piccard's failure to get his passport stamped when he initially landed.

Tech Firms 'Will Win' Encryption Battle With Authorities: Google's Schmidt

Technology firms will ultimately prevail in their efforts to use strong encryption on devices that cannot be accessed by the government, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said Wednesday.
Schmidt, speaking at a Washington think-tank, said he was "sympathetic" to the arguments of law enforcement and intelligence agencies seeking to thwart crime and terrorism, but that it is not feasible to create access only for "the good guys."eric_schmidt_smiling_ap.jpg
"We don't know how to build a trap door in these systems which is only available to the good guys," the Google chief said at a forum at the American Enterprise Institute.
"If we put a trap door in our system, first, we would have to disclose it because people would find out anyway. And second, some evil person in addition to the good guys would figure out a way to get in."
Schmidt's comments come after the heads of the FBI and National Security Agencycomplained that encryption on devices being implemented by Google, Apple and others is hurting their ability to track down criminals and terrorists.
The Google chief said however that allowing special access would be tantamount to a system allowing the government "to watch what everyone is doing in order to figure out who the bad guys are."

WhatsApp Voice Calling Already Banned by UAE's Etisalat: Report

whatsapp_logo_white.jpg

To say the WhatsApp voice calling feature has captured the attention of the masses would be an understatement, and among the latest developments regarding the rollout of the feature is a report that a United Arab Emirates (UAE) telecom operator has blocked the VoIP functionality.

A report by Emirates 24/7 cites an unnamed company source to claim Etisalat - one of two licensed telecom operators in the UAE, the other being Du - started blocking WhatsApp voice calls over its network from Monday, and that the ban would take four to six days to affect all its customers in the UAE. It is being speculated that those users who've managed to activate the feature can still continue to use it over Wi-Fi networks.

The Emirates 24/7 report adds that subscribers of Du are still able to use the WhatsApp voice calling feature, implying the telecom operator has not yet blocked the service. This leniency is not expected to last however, with a statement by the country's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) clarifying the rules surrounding the offering and usage of VoIP services in the UAE.

(Also see: WhatsApp Voice Calling - Everything You Need to Know)

The TRA in its statement says that "VoIP services are still a prerogative of the licensed providers who reserve the right to provide such services through their networks. Companies wishing to offer such services must co-ordinate with the licensed telecom providers in the UAE." The regulator's VoIP policy from 2013 states only Etisalat and Due are licensed to provide telecommunications services in the UAE, and this includes VoIP.

(Also see:What Is Net Neutrality? Here's a Simple Explanation)

Of course, with such a rule in place, WhatsApp voice calling is not the only VoIP service that is affected. Skype, perhaps the most popular VoIP service in the world, is only allowed to offer text messaging in the UAE, and the TRA confirmed that no change has been made to the VoIP policy with specific reference to the Microsoft-owned service.

Nasa's MAVEN Spacecraft Detects Mysterious Dust Cloud on Mars

The presence of the dust at orbital altitudes from 150 km to 300 km above the surface was not predicted earlier.
Although the source and composition of the dust are unknown, there is no hazard toMAVEN and other spacecraft orbiting Mars."If the dust originates from the atmosphere, this suggests we are missing some fundamental process in the Martian atmosphere," said Laila Andersson from the University of Colorado's Laboratory for Atmospherics and Space Physics (CU LASP), Boulder, Colorado. It is unknown if the cloud is a temporary phenomenon or something long lasting.
The cloud density is greatest at lower altitudes.nasa_mars_dust_official.jpg
However, even in the densest areas, it is still very thin.
So far, no indication of its presence has been seen in observations from any of the other MAVEN instruments.
Possible sources for the observed dust include dust wafted up from the atmosphere; dust coming from Phobos and Deimos, the two moons of Mars; dust moving in the solar wind away from the sun; or debris orbiting the sun from comets.
However, no known process on Mars can explain the appearance of dust in the observed locations from any of these sources.Earlier, MAVEN's Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) observed what scientists have named "Christmas lights".
"What is especially surprising about the aurora we saw is how deep in the atmosphere it occurs - much deeper than at Earth or elsewhere on Mars," added Arnaud Stiepen from the University of Colorado.
