End of an Era: India Post Discontinues Money Order Service

india_post_logo.jpg
A 135-year-old legacy comes to an end. Like in the case of the telegram, India Post has quietly discontinued the traditional money order service, which was an integral part of the department since 1880, facilitating pan-India door-delivery of funds to a payee from over 155,000 post offices.
In an era of instant communications, the traditional money transfer facility has made way for an electronic version, which was introduced in October 2008, thanks to the proliferation of mobile telephony and data communications in the country through the Internet - 18 months after they led to the demise of the telegram.
"Yes, the traditional money order as we know it has been discontinued," said Shikha Mathur Kumar, deputy director general for finance with India Post based in the national capital. "What we have now are electronic money orders, or eMO, and instant money orders, or iMO, systems," Kumar told IANS.
"Both these are much faster and simpler means to remit money."
The iMO system, according to India Post, provides instant money order service for amounts ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 50,000. An instant, web-based system, money can be remitted by designated iMO post offices - where an electronic version of a form is filled along with an identity proof.
Once the money is transferred electronically, along with one of the 33 standard messages that can be chosen by the remitter, the payee can visit the post office and receive the money on producing a proof of identity. The money can also be be credited to the savings bank of a payee.

Nikon Launches New Selfie Stick for Coolpix Cameras

nikon_selfie_stick_nmp001.jpg
Nikon has come out with a new selfie stick that is compatible with a range of its Coolpix compact cameras.
The stick, named N-MP001, is a standard Nikon-branded selfie stick that attaches to compatible cameras via the tripod mount and allows you to "conveniently and easily take self-portrait photos".
The Japanese company said its selfie stick is compatible several cameras in its range of Coolpix compact cameras, growing from 7.28 inches in its compact form to 28.54 inches when fully extended.
The stick weighs roughly 0.19kgs itself and has the ability to support a camera of up to 0.4kgs. The bottom of the stick has a foam grip for comfortable holding and a hand strap that lets you carry the stick around when it's not in use.Unlike newer selfie sticks, which are designed for smartphones and come with wireless shutter releases for triggering shots, Nikon's new offering is somewhat primitive by comparison.
It simply attaches to your camera and positions it further away from you than your arm can reach - you'll need to come up with your own strategy for triggering the shots, such as using the camera's self timer.

Twitter Complies with Turkey's Request, Sees Ban Lifted

Twitter has complied with Turkey's request to remove photographs of a prosecutor held at gunpoint by far-left militants, an official said on Monday, and a ban on it ended hours after being imposed.
YouTube, which authorities also banned after an Istanbul court ordered social media to remove any content showing the kidnapped prosecutor, remained blocked late on Monday as talks with it continued, the official said.
Mehmet Selim Kiraz, the Istanbul prosecutor seen in the pictures, was later killed in a shoot-out between his hostage takers and police last week."Twitter has agreed to shut down accounts and remove images relating to last week's hostage-taking. The website will reopen to access very shortly," the senior official told Reuters before the site became accessible again.

The micro-blogging site intends to appeal the Turkish court order, an official said without giving his name.
Other social media sites were affected as well. Facebook said it had complied with a court order to restrict access to some content or face a block on its service. A company spokesman said it would appeal the order.
Late on Monday, an Istanbul court ordered Google to remove controversial content on the prosecutor killed in hostage-taking incident, otherwise access to it would be blocked also.

Destructive Hacking Attempts Target Critical Infrastructure in Americas: Survey

Hacking attacks that destroy rather than steal data or that manipulate equipment are far more prevalent than widely believed, according to a survey of critical infrastructure organizations throughout North and South America.
The poll by the Organization of American States, to be released on Tuesday, found that 40 percent of respondents had battled attempts to shut down their computer networks, 44 percent had dealt with bids to delete files and 54 percent had encountered "attempts to manipulate" their equipment through a control system.
Those figures, provided exclusively to Reuters ahead of the official release, are all the more remarkable because only 60 percent of the 575 respondents said they had detected any attempts to steal data, long considered the predominant hacking goal.
By far the best known destructive hacking attack on U.S. soil was the electronic assault last year on Sony's Sony Pictures Entertainment, which wiped data from the Hollywood fixture's machines and rendered some of its internal networks inoperable.
The outcry over that breach, joined by President Barack Obama, heightened the perception that such destruction was an unusual extreme, albeit one that has been anticipated for years.
Destruction of data presents little technical challenge compared with penetrating a network, so the infrequency of publicized incidents has often been ascribed to a lack of motive for attackers.
Now that hacking tools are being spread more widely, however, more criminals, activists, spies and business rivals are experimenting with such methods.
"Everyone got outraged over Sony, but far more vulnerable are these services we depend on day to day," said Adam Blackwell, secretary of multidimensional security at the Washington, D.C.-based group of 35 nations.
The survey went to companies and agencies in crucial sectors as defined by the OAS members. Almost a third of the respondents were public entities, with communications, security and finance being the most heavily represented industries.

The questions did not delve into detail, leaving the amount of typical losses from breaches and the motivations of suspected attackers as matters for speculation. The survey-takers were not asked whether the attempted hacks succeeded, and some attacks could have been carried off without their knowledge.
The survey did allow anonymous participants to provide a narrative of key events if they chose, although those will not be published.
Blackwell said that one story of destruction involved a financial institution. Hackers stole money from accounts and then deleted records to make it difficult to reconstruct which customers were entitled to what funds.
"That was a really important component" of the attack, Blackwell said.
In another case, thieves manipulated equipment in order to divert resources from a company in the petroleum industry.

twitter_wooden_logo_flickr.jpg
Twitter on Monday started rolling out an improved quote tweet feature to iPhone and Web users. Announcing the upgraded feature via a tweet, the micro-blogging site noted that it will come to Android users soon.
"Say more with revamped quote tweet! Rolling out on iPhone and web, coming soon to Android," reads the tweet. With the revamped quote tweet feature, Twitter now essentially embeds the tweet below the text, insteadof just quoting it as text.
The company recently revamped the profile layout for its Android and iPhone app with 'bigger photos' layout and more.Last month, Twitter had announced that the ability to tag locations in tweets withFoursquare is "coming soon." The company previewed the feature in a video along with a tweet that reads, "Coming soon! We're working with @foursquare so you can tag specific locations in Tweets."
With the feature, users will be able to add a location to their tweets on the Web, as well as on Android, iOS, and all other Twitter mobile applications. Additionally, Android or iOS apps will be able to include precise location (e.g., the coordinates of the street intersection where you tweeted) in addition to the location label that the user selects.

Groups Urge US FTC to Investigate YouTube Kids App

youtube_kids_app_official.jpg
A coalition of consumer and children advocacy groups plans to urge federal regulators to investigate a YouTube video app aimed at children that the groups say disregards long-established safeguards limiting advertising to young audiences.
The YouTube Kids app, which was released in February, blends video programming and ads in ways that deceive children and parents, according to the groups, which include the Center for Digital Democracy, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Consumers Union.
The groups will send a letter to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday asking it to examine whether the app violates rules prohibiting unfair and deceptive marketing practices.
"The videos provided to children on YouTube Kids intermix commercial and other content in ways that are deceptive and unfair to children and would not be permitted to be shown on broadcast or cable television," reads the letter.Google Inc -owned YouTube, the world's most popular video website, launched the app earlier this year to provide families with a version of its service that it said was safer and easier for kids to use.
The selection of videos features in the app is limited to content that is appropriate for younger audiences, and the app features parental control settings that can restrict viewing time and Web search capabilities.

US Judge Allows Woman to File for Divorce via Facebook

facebook_melno_park_reuters.jpg
A Manhattan court judge has granted a Brooklyn-based nurse permission to serve her husband divorce papers via a private message posted on the social networking site Facebook after attempts to contact him failed.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Matthew Cooper ruled recently that the woman is "granted permission to serve defendant with the divorce summons using a private message through Facebook," Time magazine reported.
It is, however, unclear if the decision will set a legal precedent for others. The woman named Ellanora Baidoo, 26, married Victor Sena Blood-Dzraku both originally from Ghana in a civil ceremony in 2009.
Later, he refused to have a traditional Ghanian wedding as per the promise he made to his wife and left the apartment without informing anyone. He has, however, kept in touch from time to time with his wife on Facebook."[The] transmittal shall be repeated by plaintiff's attorney to defendant once a week for three consecutive weeks or until acknowledged by the defendant," the judge ordered.
"Additionally, after the initial transmittal, plaintiff and her attorney are to call and text message defendant to inform him that the summons for divorce has been sent to him via Facebook," he added.

Intel Compute Stick Miniature PC Goes Up for Pre-Orders; Releases April 24

intel_compute_stick_official.jpg
Intel's miniature PC - the Compute Stick - was launched at CES 2015 and is now up for pre-orders via third-party online retailers in the US.
Priced at $149.99 (approximately Rs. 9,000), the Windows 8.1-powered (with 2GB RAM, 32GB flash) variant of the Intel Compute Stick listed by online retailer Newegg is due for release on April 24. Meanwhile, Amazon and Zones have listed the Linux variant of Compute Stick with 1GB RAM and 8GB flash. The Amazon listing doesn't include a price as of now, but the Zones listing prices it at $104.99 (approximately Rs. 6,400).
The Intel Compute Stick is a four-inch-long HDMI dongle that is roughly the size of aGoogle Chromecast and can be plugged into any HDMI port the same way. It will come with Windows 8.1 or Linux pre-installed, and will provide a full PC experience. The stick also includes a full-sized USB port and a microSD card slot.
The Compute Stick is based on a low-power 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom processor (Bay Trail), much the same as the ones powering recently launched low-cost Windows tablets. The Windows version is listed to feature 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of built-in storage, apart from Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. No real details are available for the Linux versions, though the listings mention 1GB and 8GB, presumably for memory and storage respectively.
Recently, Google and Taiwan's Asus also launched a "computer on a stick" which can plug into a display to turn it into a PC. The Asus Chromebit would be arriving mid-year with a low price tag."Smaller than a candy bar, the Chromebit is a full computer that will be available for less than $100," Google said. "By simply plugging this device into any display, you can turn it into a computer. It's the perfect upgrade for an existing desktop and will be really useful for schools and businesses."
