Google Maps Lets You Play Pac-Man on City Streets This April Fools' Day

google_maps_pac_man_screenshot.jpg
Google's mapping service rolled out a gamefied version inspired by the classic Pac-Man, turning the real streets of a city into a labyrinth to gobble up pellets and ghosts.
A Google spokeswoman said the game was an early April Fools' joke. It allows users to play the game featuring the popular character created in 1980 in select locations.
If there are not enough roads at a given site, the game cannot be played, and Google alerts users that "it looks like Pac-Man can't play here."

How to go from a nobody to a social media somebody

After years of skulking about digital fringes, sometime last year I grudgingly joined the land of living twitterers with: "Now what?" It was rhetorical of course. Nonetheless, one of the first replies to set my notifications tab on fire (not) was this: "It's not about the number of followers."

For a noncommittal social media user, the insight was rather reassuring. But it was all rot. The truth is we're obsessed with flaunting numbers as some true measure of our output, however shallow the system may be. In the new world, the leading indicator of fame and personal worth is social media footprint -- likes for comments and memes, hearts for selfies, shares of vines and posts, tally of subscribers, fans, friends, followers, tweets, retweets (RTs) or favourites. Vanity is virtue not sin, Sonny.

Brands pick their "influencers" based not on the wit in their last tweet. And why should they? Marketers are not in it for life-altering conversations and epicurean discoveries. It's all about reach. You may fancy yourself the Bard reincarnated, but if you've got not more than a handful under your influence then what use have you for a suit? The fact is we live in a likeconomy and we're all, some kicking and mocking, a part of it.

However, that's easier said than done. Because most of us weren't born with the natural ability to amass social currency with relentless real-time coverage of and commentary on the seemingly mundane. Not all hold the unshakable conviction that every passing contemplation merits the privilege of being published. Nor the talent of unflinchingly throwing oneself into conversations without reasonable thought or cause.

So we must look to digital somebodies or influencers for answers. And their more successful brethren, YouTube moguls, who are the protagonists of a real rags-to-internet-riches story. They're usually twenty-somethings who found global fame all on their own PCs, built communities of fans and expanded their empires online and off with content and marketing strategies made by and for the millennial generation. Skipping the obvious requirements of content with relevancy and high interest value, a modest grasp of language, a decent camera and video editing skills, here's basically what to do to win the internet, not break it.

Flickr Adds Public Domain and Creative Commons 0 Photo Sharing Options

flickr_spacex_publicdomain.jpg
Yahoo-owned photo sharing platform Flickr has announced that it will allow users to select new open licences for sharing photos. The new licences - Public Domain and Creative Commons 0 - are now available as options for photographers who share their images on the platform.
Flickr announced the licensing changes through a blog post on Monday, where it stated that it had received feedback from users who wanted to share their images freely by releasing their copyright under CC0 or list them as Public Domain. Images under these new licences are available for anyone for any purpose, without any restrictions under copyright law.
One of the first Flickr accounts to adopt the new licensing protocols was Elon Musk's space transportation company, SpaceX, which has uploaded dozens of images of its launches and rocket facilities to the site and activated Public Domain licensing on all of them. All of these stunning images are free for use, be it commercial or non-commercial, without needing permission or proper attribution.
Flickr has not confirmed this, but it is believed that the new licensing options have come about as a direct result of Elon Musk facing criticism for not keeping his images truly free of copyright. He initially released them under a Creative Commons license, but later changed over to a CC-BY license (which allows free use as long as attribution is maintained), since there was no licensing option that allowed a more free use of his photos. Upon activation of the CC0 and Public Domain options, SpaceX promptly changed the licensing to Public Domain.

Google has announced the launch and availability of a variety of new low-cost devices running its ChromeOS platform, including traditional Chromebooks, a touch-enabled 2-in-1, and an ultra-compact HDMI stick that can be plugged into any display.

The Asus Chromebook Flip is described as a "premium metal" device and has a keyboard as well as a 10.1-inch touchscreen which can fold over backwards for better comfort when used as a tablet. It will be available in the US within two months for $249 (approximately Rs. 15,525). The Chromebook Flip is based on a Rockchip 3288 processor with four ARM Cortex A17 cores, and promises 10 hours of battery life. The screen resolution is 1280x800 and there is 16GB of storage space.

The Verge notes that while ChromeOS hasn't always been touch-centric, Android apps are expected to be portable across Google's two operating systems soon. Touch-enabled Chromebooks have been available before, but the OS now has Android's virtual keyboard making tablet and convertible form factors possible for the first time.

Google also had announcements regarding more traditional Chromebooks. Two new models, built by Haier and Hisense, also based on ARM Cortex-A17 processors, will bring the entry-level price down to $149 (approximately Rs. 9,300). Both feature 11.6-inch 1366x768-pixel screens, 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in, and both devices offer two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI output, and a microSD card slot. Nasa's OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Mission Passes Critical Milestone to Launch

The Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission has passed a critical milestone in its path towards launch and is officially authorised to transition into its next phase, the US space agency said in a statement.flickr_spacex_publicdomain.jpg
"This is an exciting time for the OSIRIS-REx team. After almost four years of intense design efforts, we are now proceeding with the start of flight system assembly," said Dante Lauretta, principal investigator for OSIRIS-Rex at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
OSIRIS-REx is the first US mission to return samples from an asteroid to the Earth.
The spacecraft will travel to a near-Earth asteroid called Bennu and bring at least a 60-gram sample back to Earth for study.
OSIRIS-REx carries five instruments that will remotely evaluate the surface of Bennu.
The mission will help scientists investigate the composition of the very early solar system and the source of organic materials and water that made their way to the Earth, and improve understanding of asteroids that could impact our planet.
OSIRIS-REx is scheduled for launch in late 2016. The spacecraft will reach Bennu in 2018 and return a sample to the Earth in 2023.

Snapdeal Says Not in Immediate Need to Raise Money

snapdeal_packages_reuters.jpg
E-commerce company Snapdeal.com is not looking to raise money immediately and is well capitalised for the next couple of years, a top executive said on Tuesday.
The SoftBank-backed company trails Flipkart in India's $12 billion online shopping market, with Amazon Inc's India unit close behind in third place, as measured by gross merchandise volume.
Snapdeal raised $627 million from Japan's SoftBank in October last year.
Chief Executive Kunal Bahl said Snapdeal had not yet used that money yet. "(We) don't have to raise money now just because it is fashionable," he said.
Snapdeal last month was in the news when it announced it would be investing between $150 million and $200 million (roughly Rs. 942 crores - Rs. 1,256 crores) to strengthen its delivery network in the next financial year.

The report which claimed Alibaba was now reluctant to invest in Snapdeal had added that talks the two firms were in did not involve a deal close to the $1 billion (roughly Rs. 6,234 crores) investment previously reported.
Getting logistics and deliveries in place is a critical requirement for e-commerce firms in India. Snapdeal competes in India with bigger rivals Flipkart and Amazon as they fight to win over the country's 300 million-strong urban middle class, who have come to expect free deliveries and returns as well as great deals on everything from clothes to car accessories.

Telecom Operators Contest DoT's Tariff Calculations Post-Auction

mobile_user_at_mwc_afp.jpg
Mobile operators and telecom equipment makers on Tuesday contested the Department of Telecom's (DoT) calculation on the impact of the recent spectrum (airwaves) auction on tariff.
"We will be happy to understand the government's calculation on the impact of thespectrum auction and the increased financial burden on the industry if tariffs are not increased in proportion to the huge payouts," the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said in a statement.
In the latest spectrum uctions conducted over three weeks from March 2-24, the central government had raked in $18 billion from eight telecom operators, as the bids were amongst highest by global standards.
The industry body disputed the basis on which Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that tariffs should not increase beyond Rs. 0.013 per minute, as the spectrum had been given for 20 years when the industry's annual expenditure is expected to be Rs. 5,300 crores per annum,
The industry's analysis of the financial implications of the e-auction, however, indicates a steep increase of 12-15 percent on the present tariffs to make up for the cash outflows of the cellular operators, the COAI said.
"DoT has not factored inflation in its calculation though inevitable on a 20-year-period. At the current annual inflation rate of 6-7 percent, its impact will be a hefty sum, pushing the tariffs significantly," it said.
The industry association also expressed concern on the government not taking into consideration the interest burden on the debt the industry will have to raise for meeting the spectrum requirements.

Microsoft Previews Music and Video Apps for Windows 10, Drops Xbox Branding

microsoft_store_opening_sc.jpg
Microsoft, after releasing its Project Spartan browser as a part of the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview build, has now previewed new versions of its Xbox Music and Xbox Video apps for Windows 10 - called Music and Video.
The new Music and Video preview apps are available to download from the Windows Store Beta for Windows Insiders running the latest build of the Windows 10 Technical Preview, Microsoft's blog post explains. Apart from being Universal apps, the main highlight of the new apps is the removal of the 'Xbox' branding that was seen in previous versions of the app for Windows 10. This should prove to be a positive step as it previously confused users who thought the Xbox Music and Xbox Videos apps were only available for the Microsoft gaming console, Xbox One. The preview apps are said to be similar to the Windows 8.1 Music and Video app offerings, but with slightly tweaked.
