Amazon WorkMail Cloud-Based Email and Calendar Service Announced

US online giant Amazon announced plans Wednesday to offer a cloud-based email and calendar service to directly compete with Microsoft Outlook and others.
The service dubbed Amazon WorkMail "enables users to send and receive email, manage contacts, share calendars, and book resources using the same email applications they use today" including Outlook and services like Google Apps. The service appears aimed at corporate customers that currently pay for Microsoft Outlook or other services.

Amazon, offering the service through its cloud unit Amazon Web Services, will charge $4 per user per month and include 50GB of mailbox storage for each user. The service may also be bundled with Amazon WorkDocs, a file storage service previously known as Zocalo.
The service "is fully compatible with Microsoft Outlook, and customers can quickly integrate Amazon WorkMail with their existing corporate directory, choose encryption keys, select the location where they want their data to reside, and pay only for the mailboxes they create," Amazon said in a statement."Customers have repeatedly asked us for a business email and calendaring service that is more cost-effective and simpler to manage than their on-premises solution, more secure than the cloud-based offerings available today, and that is backed by the same best-in-class infrastructure platform on which they're reliably running so many of their current (and future) workloads," said Peter De Santis, vice president at Amazon Web Services.

Facebook to Sell Realtime Super Bowl Ads, Taking on Twitter

This Super Bowl Facebook is taking a page from Twitter's playbook, for the first time during a football championship selling ads that target people based on what they are talking about in real time. These include video ads that will play automatically on Facebook's newsfeed, triggered by key words that members mention in their posts as they watch the American football game on Feb. 1.
Smartphones and tablets provide a second screen for the Super Bowl's 100 million television viewers to comment about the game as it proceeds, giving advertisers a more precise way to target messages.Twitter is the leader in this arena that other social media networks are seeking to emulate. Mondelez International's Oreo sent out clever tweets when the lights went out during the Super Bowl in 2013, a stunt considered to be a marketing coup.

"Twitter has owned the mantel of being a real-time platform but the sophistication of Facebook's ad targeting is unparalleled," said Noah Mallin, head of social for north America at MEC, a media buying agency that is part of WPP.
At last year's Super Bowl, marketers on Facebook could target ads to segments of members based on their likes, profiles and demographic information. Facebook has introduced real-time targeting features since then, and this year the social network, with 155 million daily users in the United States and Canada, will customize audience clusters that advertisers can target in real time during the game.

Google Play Beats App Store Again in 2014 Downloads; Still Makes Less Money

Google Play has once again outpaced Apple's App Store in app download numbers, as per the latest year-in-review for 2014 by App Annie, a data-tracking firm. However, in terms of monetisation or revenue generation, App Store is still far ahead of Google Play.
According to the report, Google Play had 60 percent more app downloads globally than the App Store in 2014. The large number of downloads and disparity with the iOS system is quite obviously due to the wide reach of Android smartphones and tablets across the world. However, in case of revenue generation, the report finds that iOS users spend more.

The table shown by App Annie (seen below) suggests a consistent rise in revenue on both the platforms, but the App Store still generated 70 percent more revenue than Google Play in 2014.The report states that App Store generated a huge chunk of revenue from its key markets - US, Japan and South Korea. The three regions together generated more revenue than the rest of the world combined.
Overall, the BRIC countries namely Brazil, Russia, India and China performed well, and nearly doubled their revenues, says App Annie.According to VentureBeat, Apple is able to generate more revenue from apps because it has a long history of collecting and keeping credit card details of users.
The first service was started almost a decade ago with its iTunes Music platform. Also, Google Play apps download growth is dominated by free apps like Flappy Bird, Clash of Clans and others, which don't make much and depend on in-app purchases and advertisements for their revenue.

LG to Make Flexible, Shatter-Proof Plastic OLED Displays This Year: Reports

LG Chemical and LG Display are set to start mass-producing new all-plastic flexibleOLED display panels by July. The firms are said to have given details on the new flexible display technology, and have made the first samples available for customers. The flexible plastic-OLED (P-OLED) displays made by LG until now (LG G Flex and G Flex2) still feature some glass in them, limiting the bending radius to a maximum of 75mm while also preventing them from being shatter-proof.
However, the upcoming all-plastic OLED display panels from LG now feature a bending radius at a much sharper 30mm, and are virtually shatter-proof, as reported by OLED Display website (via Tom's Hardware). LG is quoted to say the biggest problem with P-OLED displays is that they are not as efficient, bright, or accurate (in terms of colour reproduction) when compared to their glass-based counterparts.
The company reportedly overcame these problems with improvements in its barrier and encapsulation technologies. The new flexible display by LG is said to have an efficiency of 60 lumens/Watt, feature 807 nits peak brightness output, a 3000K colour temperature and a CRI (Colour Rendering Index) of 85.
So while the display might not be the best in the market as compared to other glass-based displays, it comes close. LG not only plans to limit its upcoming flexible P-OLED displays to smartphones, but also bring it in tablets, PCs, TV sets, and car dashboards. The South Korean tech firm has added that by 2017 it hopes to create foldable computers.
This is of course no mean feat, requiring a significant number of flexible components apart from just the display, from the motherboard to the battery and body. With the mass production said to begin in July, it remains unclear just how LG will introduce these flexible displays to the world.
We may witness the first smartphone using the technology at the CES 2016 expo with the LG G Flex3, but that is still a long way away.

Apple Takes Top Luxury Gifting Spot in China: Report

Apple Inc has taken the number one luxury gifting spot in China from designer goods maker Hermes International SCA, according to a Hurun luxury report on Thursday, reflecting the iPhone maker's recent hot streak in the country.
The U.S. tech firm's focus on glitzy stores and high prices helped it post a 70 percent rise in sales in China in the last three months of 2014 and powered the company to the largest profit in corporate history.Spending on gift-giving overall dropped 5 percent in 2014, after a 25 percent drop the year before, according to the Hurun Chinese Luxury Consumer Survey.
Beijing has been cracking down on corruption and luxury spending among public officials, weighing down sales of premium liquor to handbags.Domestic luxury spending in China dipped for the first time last year, according to consultancy Bain & Co, with increasing numbers of shoppers looking to spend money overseas."Travel retail continues to change the dynamics of luxury in China, with 7 out of 10 luxury goods bought by Chinese now being bought overseas," said Hurun Report Chairman Rupert Hoogewerf.
Hermes dropped to seventh from the top spot last year, while Chinese premium liquor maker Kweichow Moutai Co Ltd re-entered the top 10 after a two year hiatus, a potentially positive sign after sales were hit by the anti-luxury campaign.
Apple in first place was followed by LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton SE, Kering SA's Gucci and Chanel.

Nasa Working on Low-Cost Daytime Star Tracker

Nasa engineers are developing a precision attitude sensor or star tracker that would be able to locate stars during daylight hours.
The team at Nasa's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, is working on a low-cost, off-the-shelf solution to overcome the challenges of collecting data in daylight, the US space agency said in a statement. The star tracker is being developed specifically for the Wallops Arc Second Pointer (WASP) which would use the star tracker's data to point a balloon-borne scientific payload with incredible accuracy and stability.
Currently, WASP usually employs the commonly used ST5000 star tracker. However, this device cannot take images in the daytime even at 120,000 feet where scientific balloons operate.Though relatively dark at those altitudes, the scattering of sunlight off the atmosphere can overwhelm the starlight in most star cameras.
"A precision attitude sensor capable of working in the daylight would extend science operations through the day which would significantly increase the amount of science collected," explained engineer Scott Heatwole.
Currently, the only precision attitude sensor available in daytime is a sun sensor."This is not ideal because it provides only two axes of attitude and is not precise over a range of targets across the sky," he noted.
According to Heatwole, his daytime star tracker consists of a commercial firewire camera attached to a lens and baffle that help filter out visible light, allowing it to sense points of reference in the near-infrared wavelength bands. In 2014, a prototype of the device flew on two WASP missions.
